Nvidia shares were soaring as tech stocks led markets higher following strong results from AMD and a positive note from analysts at Morgan Stanley.
It's another busy day on Wall Street. Here are three things investors should know for Wednesday, July 31. The biggest news of the day will come at 2 p.m. ET, when the Federal Reserve announces its decision on interest rates. It's widely expected the Fed will leave rates unchanged, but Fed Chair Jerome Powell's comments at the news conference will be put under a microscope as investors look for hints that a rate cut could be coming in September. It's a tale of two Big Tech stocks. Microsoft's (MSFT) fiscal fourth quarter results topped Street estimates, but revenue from its Intelligent Cloud unit disappointed. Meanwhile, Advanced Micro Devices (AMD) reported better-than-expected second quarter results and issued upbeat Q3 guidance thanks to demand for its AI chips. Boeing (BA) is also in focus. The aerospace giant named Robert “Kelly” Ortberg as its new CEO. Ortberg, who was formerly CEO of Rockwell Collins, will replace CEO David Calhoun, who announced his intention to step down by the end of the year. Boeing also reported a wider-than-expected second quarter loss as it continues to grapple with production issues. Microsoft earnings were lifting up the rest of the market on Wednesday—even as its own stock was falling. Shares of Microsoft fell 1.6% to $416.26 in recent trading. Microsoft’s capital expenditures were $19 billion in its latest quarter, and nearly all of that was cloud and AI-related spending, the company said.
