Jobs

In Earth Land, there is an organized system that Guilds utilize to intermediate Jobs (仕事 Shigoto),^[1] which Mages, Mercernaries, Assassins and Treasure Hunters are able to partake in and receive reimbursement upon completion, most commonly by Jewels.

Description[]

Jobs are missions and quests sent out to Guilds by a client to request someone or multiple individuals in need of help, expecting those with the skill to handle it. All jobs are printed as flyers giving details about the mission along with the expected reward, be it money or something valuable in general. The flyers are pinned on the Guild's Request Board where its members can pick and choose what job they're interested in taking.^[2]

Once someone accepts a job mission, a notification will be sent to the client, informing them that there are those on their way to resolve the client’s issue.^[3] However, those who initially took the job can choose to cancel taking it at anytime.^[4] The client can also update the job request at anytime, such as either canceling the request or increasing the sum of the reward.^[5]

Job flyers for catching criminals also doubles as wanted posters,^[6] only those dangerous enough to have a high enough bounty on their heads will also have “Dead or Alive” written on their poster.^[7] Clients can also request a specific person by name to take the job they’re offering.^[8]

Job Types[]

Jobs vary in difficulty and are divided into different ranks. The current known ranks are Normal,^[2] S-Class, SS-Class, 10-Year and 100-Year Jobs,^[9] divided as such in order to have the Mages distinguish them by the level of difficulty involved. This also helps a Mage select a Job that is convenient of their capability. The amount of money offered can also be an indicator to the job's difficulty. Guilds are not limited by the type of profession the Job requires, such as a Mage Guild can take a treasure hunting job instead of an actual Treasure Hunter guild. Jobs can range from normal professions such as teaching,^[10] catering,^[11] acting etc.^[12] to those strong and skilled enough to hunt monsters,^[13] retrieving items, infiltration,^[14] safe guarding someone or items for transport^[15] apprehending criminals or saving citizens from dangerous and unfortunate predicaments in general.^[16]

Normal Jobs[]

These Jobs cater to Mages of different levels of strengths, and a Mage does not need to be exceptionally strong to undertake these assignments. Also, the reward is variable upon the task required to complete, so Mages may leverage amongst different available missions to the amount of Jewels offered when making their decision of what mission to participate in.^[2]

Eligible Participants

• All Mages, who are in Legal Guilds.

S-Class Jobs[]

These missions are extremely dangerous, where even the smallest mistake may lead to a Mage's death.^[17] In order to undertake an S-Class Job, the Mage must be an S-Class Mage. However, an exception to this rule is that a group of non S-Class Mages must be accompanied by an official S-Class Mage, as seen with the "Take Over Siblings".^[13] The reward for these Jobs can be rather large,^[17] with some missions, such as Subjugation missions, spanning into millions of Jewels.^[18]

Eligible Participants

• Only Mages who gained S-Class status, such as Laxus Dreyar, Erza Scarlet, Mirajane Strauss, Gildarts Clive and Mystogan.^[17]

SS-Class Jobs[]

These missions can be inferred to possessing a much higher level of risk and difficulty than S-Class Jobs. An experienced Mage must have acquired S-Class status to undertake these missions. The missions may also be given to an eligible candidate within the Guild that the Job is mediated through.^[19]

Eligible Participants

• Experienced S-Class Mages (such as Gildarts Clive).^[19]

10 Year Jobs[]

As the name suggests, 10 Year Jobs are the missions that have been available for over 10 years and have yet to be completed.^[19] They are incredibly dangerous in nature.

Eligible Participants

• Only the most powerful S-Class Mages.

100 Year Jobs[]

Similar to the 10 Year Jobs, these Jobs are named as such due to the fact that the missions have been available for over 100 years but have yet to be completed by any Mage.^[20] Gildarts Clive is currently the only known Mage to undergo a 100 Year Job, but even he was unable to complete such a mission. He is also the first one to return alive from one of those Jobs,^[21] which would infer the immense level of danger involved with these Jobs.

• Only Mages of the highest caliber are eligible for Jobs of this rank.

Forbidden Jobs[]

There are certain Jobs that have been banned and are therefore illegal for Mages to participate, doing so would constitute as criminal activity and brand the Guild as a Dark Guild. Such examples include Assassination Jobs, being hired to kill people.^[22] Mages are also banned from taking Mercenary Jobs, fearing the possibility of Mages clashing would result in a severe amount of casualties.^[23]
