Though Balarama may be an avatar of Lord Vishnu, as per some scriptures, this avatar is certainly not counted as one of the ten avatars constituting the Dasha (ten) avatars. The list in this template has 11 avatars. Balarama needs to be removed from this list. Comments? Hari 08:06, 9 January 2007 (UTC)[reply]

There are many Gods in Hinduism that incarnate themselves as humans one stage in their lives not just Vishnu. Lakshmi came as Sita Devi and Sesha came as Lakshman. DaGizza Chat (c) 08:49, 6 November 2005 (UTC)[reply]

Reference

[edit]

Is there a reference to substantiate the assertion that Hindu scripture considers Buddha to be an Avatar of Vishnu? Addhoc 17:59, 3 October 2006 (UTC)[reply]

Remove buddha from this Template

[edit]

It is not balarama "The Buddha" has to be removed from this template. On what basis Buddha is included in this template? Now the number of avatars is 11 according to this template and how can you still call it dasvathar. —The preceding unsigned comment was added by Shijualex (talkcontribs) 06:35, 5 March 2007 (UTC).[reply]

The above discussion is taking place on the Vaishnavism wikiproject talk page at, Template:VishnuAvatars. Thanks. Ism schism (talk) 03:00, 16 March 2008 (UTC)[reply]

Links given as of now:

I suggest one of the first two.--Redtigerxyz (talk) 13:12, 26 March 2008 (UTC)[reply]

I think the first is the most appropriate. Thanks. Ism schism (talk) 13:16, 26 March 2008 (UTC)[reply]

Other avatars

[edit]

There are 24 avatars of Vishnu totally, how about adding the other avatars here too.--Redtigerxyz (talk) 11:42, 21 September 2008 (UTC)[reply]

There quite a few more then that. I guess to justify this a number of structural adjustments have to be made. Wikidās ॐ 15:07, 21 September 2008 (UTC)[reply]
These 24 are listed as per the Bhagavata Purana as well as Chaubis Avatar by Guru Govind Singh.--Redtigerxyz (talk) 10:52, 22 September 2008 (UTC)[reply]
There are many lists in Bhagavata Purana. There are yet many other lists in other Puranas. What is the objective reason of selecting one over the other? Wikidās ॐ 16:54, 22 September 2008 (UTC)[reply]
Other lists have mentioned them.--Redtigerxyz (talk) 13:02, 23 September 2008 (UTC)[reply]

The list of avatars

[edit]

I have revised the list per the following sources:

  1. Ken Morgan, page 55: Fish, Tortoise, Boar, Man-lion, Dwarf, Parasurana, Rama, Balarama, Buddha, Kalkin
  2. Roshen Dalal, page 112. List 1: Matsya, Kurma, Varaha, Narasimha, Vamana, Parashurama, Rama, Krishna, Buddha and Kalki. (note: the peer reviewed source #3 includes this same list)
  3. Padmanabh S. Jaini, Jina Ṛṣabha as an "Avatāra" of Viṣṇu (but in the larger list, as one of the 24 avataras)
  4. Roshen Dalal, page 112. List 2 (Vijayanagara Relief): Matsya, Kurma, Varaha, Narasimha, Vamana, Parashurama, Rama, Balarama, Jina and Kalki. (note: the peer reviewed source #3 includes this same list)

I will add Jina Rishabha later, but await comments for now, Ms Sarah Welch (talk) 17:07, 6 July 2017 (UTC)[reply]
