While I created this article as an obvious redirect to the use of the phrase "call an audible" in an existing article, that use is documented specific to only one sport, even if it is the origin of the phrase, and does not mention the common use of the phrase as a metaphor.

The phrase "call an audible" is used in sports beyond American Football, e.g.

Based on these examples from a trivial quick search of Google News (https://news.google.com/search?q=%22call%20an%20audible%22%20-football), I think it’s worth considering creating a standalone call an audible article that documents:

  • The origin: Quarterback#Special_tactics
  • The spread to use in other sports
  • The use as a metaphor, both in sports contexts and beyond sports contexts
