From 1981 to 1987 she was assistant professor at the Faculty of Statistics of the University of Padua, from 1987 to 1999 she was associate professor at the Department of Electronics and Computer Science of the University of Padua and then full professor at the Department of Information Engineering of the same University until retirement in October 2020.

In 1990 she started the European Summer School in Information Retrieval (ESSIR).

With Costantino Thanos and other experts she started the Italian Research Conference on Digital Library Systems (IRCDL[4]). She has been the Chair of the Steering Committee of the International Conference on Theory and Practice of Digital Libraries (TPDL[5]); member of the Editorial Board of the International Journal on Digital Libraries; member of the Editorial Board of Information Processing and Management, the Computer Journal and the Information Retrieval Journal.
