  Pros

  Worked first time with full brute force, all options selected, in less than 30 seconds. I was able to look great to management by accessing files created in 2009 by a short sighted admin. Password security, at that time, was on very few people's radar. Simple interface that even novice users should be able to understand.

  Cons

  None, worked as advertised. would I like it to recover 27 character mixed passwords in all format Excel and Word files. Of course, but that is not a reasonable expectation.

  Summary

  Definitely worth trying, especially free. Based on my experience I would not hesitate to trust purchasing the full version if I thought I needed it. A winner, and a plus for a tech tool chest.

  Pretty simple. I created a password-protected Word document and saved it as a "Word 97-2003 Document". Then I tried this program using a Dictionary Attack with a dictionary file that contained the actual password. Result was "Password not found". Bottom line: It doesn't work

  I had a simple document with a password I had forgotten and this program said automatically no problem password can be cleared but I need to go online which then asked me to purchase the product. Useless !

• Free tool that can recover passwords to old Office docs

  Free and capable of recovering passwords for the documents saved in the old Office 97-2003 format

  Does not support newer Office 2007-2013 documents

  Summary

  I used to recover passwords to my documents with this program a few years back and it successfully retrieved the passwords. As noted above, it cannot recover passwords for files saved in Office 2007 and newer versions so I signed up for the commercial service which is advertised in this program. That service is called Password-find.com and it does support the new file formats. If the older formats are the only ones you have, I certainly recommend you go with this free Wizard.

  Pros

  Tool took 10 seconds to "crack" a simple password I had created for a Word doc about 10 years ago. Easy to use. Thank You to the Developer for this great tool.

  Not sure if it can handle more complex passwords.

• Got more than I asked for! BEWARE!!

  I learned something: that not all of the CNET downloads are free of unwanted extras.

  Cons

  Gave me a bunch of malware and changed my toolbar, both of which I had declined when installing. Huh? How did that happen? Pain in the butt to totally remove. I HOPE it's all gone. Plus it does not work for Word 2007 or 2010. It just sends you to a link where you can buy a more powerful program to get around a forgotten password. Bait and switch, plus malware? NO THANKS!

  Summary

  A huge waste of time if you are hoping to get some help with later versions of Word.
