What should I do with an iPad I found?

My first two concerns are having the abilities to return this device to the rightful owner, my second concern is if I risk giving up my location. The latter comes from a point of privacy and security to myself, as I probably don’t know the person and have no idea what their reaction might be if I pick up their lost device. Has the Apple team set such safety nets where I can feel safe that I picked up the device in good will? While maintaining my location private for my own safety? I assume that they have. Yet I’m unsure. Does anyone have any good guidance? Thanks in advance!

An iPhone picked up at a surplus store (if that’s what you meant by Good Will) is very likely Activation Locked, and therefore useless.

If this is Activation Locked, it will never be useful to you. Recycle it.

If the iPhone is not Activation Locked, it can be reset. But you’re here, asking this, so it’s likely locked. Recycle it.

If you picked it up elsewhere and didn’t buy it at a surplus store, why bring it home? Turn it into local police or local lost and found where it was located.

You just need to turn it in at:

  • Lost and Found
  • Front Desk of nearby building
  • Police

Of course the owner is able to track the phone, so if you are carrying it around, then they are able to see your location. There is no way for you to stop that from happening and if you could, a thief would do it as well to prevent the phone from being found. In some cases the owner may have entered contact information when they marked it as lost that will appear on the phone when you turn it on.

There is no reason why you should be carrying the phone around with you. All that you should be doing is to taking it to locations described above, or something similar, so the owner can track the iPhone and be able to pick it up.

This is a user-to-user forum. Apple largely is not here, except to moderate it.

The others are correct. If you found a device, and want to return it to its rightful owner, turn it into a lost & found department or front desk (where the owner would logically come looking for it), or to the police.
