Women in Middle Ages
Many women in the dark ages
gave there life to God
and became nuns
Life in medieval times wasn't very fun for women; it was rare to find women living a “comfortable” life. Women really had awful lives in the Dark Ages. Woman’s life in medieval ages did not compare to our fairy tales we tell about princes and living happily ever after, for many reasons. Women worked in jobs just as much as the men did and didn't get paid as much as the men, although there were very few jobs for women in this society. Some jobs for women were helping make clothes. Women who were in the monarchy or were nobles would rule the castle while their husbands were away. Women were extremely important in family life, they served as a mother, cooked the food, watched their children, although this was only common in poor homes. Rich people had nurses to do this all for them. Being rich and a woman was a rare luxury, as you can imagine many females dreamed of being rich. That was because 90% of female population in medieval times lived and worked the farms.
Women had few and rare rights, although there many laws against women! Some of these unfair rules were: no getting married without parents’ permission (women really didn't get to choose their husbands and if in the often times in the monarchy so two kingdoms would be allies), no owning businesses, no owning land unless you are a widow. Girls in this time period had to grow up extremely fast, because at age 10 or 11 they were treated as adults, and if you were poor you had to work at young age. If you were one of the lucky wealthy girls you would have got married in your teens, which once again was your parent's choice not yours. On the other hand, most girls who weren't rich got married got married in their 20s, they got married later because their family wanted them to be at home working for as long as possible. In medieval Europe it was a very good sign to be pregnant with a rich man’s child, so if you were rich for a majority of the marriage you were pregnant. This wasn't good because about 20% of women died in childbirth because good medicine was very rare back then. Most un-wealthy women lived about 40 years. Women had to obey to men in their family or else they would be beaten. The way society treated women was very “dark”. Even with all of this injustice towards women, the brave females of this time barely complained.
