I do this with club soda and it’s less calories. Tastes better too. Get the high end cherries.
My preferred name for this drink is a Shirley Temple Black. In honor of the star all grown up.
I remember drinking Shirley Temples ( we called them Roy Rogers at the time) at the Brown Derby in Beverly Hills in the late 50s and early 60s. Always ginger ale. Sprite might be sickly sweet. I’m with Adrienne on the club soda idea.
I thought boys got a "Roy Rogers" and girls got a "Shirley Temple"-- same drink.
Ugh, Amy Sherman-Palladino already named this drink 20 years ago in an episode of Gilmore Girls: it's a Shirley Temple Black.
So- while I LOVED Shirley temples as a child, I am not a fan of sweet stuff these days. I altered this recipe to the following: 1.5oz vodka .5 (or scant less) of grenadine 1 Luxardo Maraschino Cherry 1 T lemon juice And instead of soda, I used lemon-lime waterloo seltzer.
A Roy Roger is made with Coke/Pepsi (your pick).
Best made with diet Sprite and keto grenadine so no sugar and fewer carbs. I also like to sub out the cherry with a cheese doodle and double the vodka.
If it doesn't include lemon-lime soda, it's not a Shirley Temple, though by all means a citrus-y ginger beer would be interesting on its own merits. If you have time and want to upgrade your base, make your own syrup by letting strips of lemon and lime peel macerate in their fruits' juices, sweetened with granulated sugar for three days. Squash and strain the mixture, combining the resulting syrup with club soda.
Shirley Temple = 7up, Roy Rogers = Coke
Richard, I thought Roy Rogers were cola and grenadine, not Sprite (which is only for Shirley Temples)!
Any opinions on the best (most natural tasting) grenadine?
Shirley Temple is with sprite. Roy Rogers is with coke.
Looks like glacé cherries, not maraschino, in the photo?
I make a dirtier version of this. Swap grenadine for a shot of Aperol. It turns this into one delightful vixen.
I've always had Shirley Temple's with Sprite and the terribly saccharine "grenadine" that comes from a pump in restaurants. This was delightful with quality grenadine and some lime to bump up the citrus and tame the sweetness. Adding club soda or seltzer in lieu of part of the Sprite, makes this even more delicious and addictive:)
Today I looked for lemon-lime seltzer at Lidl to make this, and instead discovered they had cherry-lime seltzer. I predict that this will work well. If it's not sweet enough, I will add a little simple syrup.
Cloyingly sweet.
Adding a bit of lime juice helps cut the sweetness a bit.
In our household growing up, my sister & I enjoyed Shirley Temples while my folks had Manhattans. We made ours with ginger ale, but the best part was that ALL of our drinks got a couple dashes of Angostura bitters, along with a cocktail cherry garnish. It made us kids feel like we really were having cocktails along with the grown-ups. I haven’t tried this recipe yet but when I do, I’ll be adding a couple dashes of aromatic bitters, and I recommend others try it, too.
Great drink to showcase homemade Grenadine and home canned cocktail cherries. Added a teaspooon each of lemon and lime juice to the recipe. Divine drinking here, love it!
I’ve been ordering this as a Vodka Collins with Grenadine for about 35 years. It’s better with simple syrup, lime and a hit of seltzer instead of pre-made soda.
This was so delicious that my poor friend had a rough night.
A roy rodgers is a coke with grenadine syrup.
Roy Rodgers are made with Cola. Shirley Temples are made with 7 Up.
If you are out of lemon-lime soda you can always use Topo Chico and the juice of half lime and half lemon
