This is a no-recipe recipe, a recipe without an ingredients list or steps. It invites you to improvise in the kitchen.

Take a quick trip to the supermarket on the way home: bread and a small head of radicchio, as well as a half-pound of thin-sliced ham at the deli counter and some good mustard. When you’re ready to eat, cut the ham and radicchio into ribbons, then sauté the radicchio in a medium-hot sauté pan with a few glugs of olive oil and some chopped garlic until softened. Take the pan off the stove, add the ham and toss to combine. Meanwhile, slice the bread — you want two slices per person — and toast it if you like. Either way, slash some mustard onto the slices. Pile the warm radicchio and ham on top and consume with good wine.

A decadent lunch! I used half a small radicchio and a few slices of ham for a single serving (2 toasts). Toasted some sourdough slices with 3 pieces of Swiss cheese and layered on plenty of whole grain mustard. Toasting is not optional, the crunch is a great contrast and keeps the bread sturdy enough to hold up the toppings. Glass of red was a great pairing. Yum!

I made a grilled swiss cheese layered with the ham, radiccio and mustard. I sautéed in a few thin slices of onion, too. Wonderful lunch with sliced apples on the side.

I've love this and have made it many times. Two winning adjustments: Sautee hot soppressata to flavor the oil instead of or in addition to the garlic. Stir in some creamy goat cheese right before serving.

Fantastic quick lunch. I subbed ham for slices of prosciutto on top (yolo).

Made this exactly as written. It was just perfect

Subbed shallot for garlic, added capers, skipped the mustard and didn’t toast the bread. Divine!

Needed something, maybe a drizzle of balsamic? A cheese melted on top could also be an answer.

made this to use up some leftover Easter-dinner ham. We made sandwiches on Hawaiian rolls instead of toasts. My husband is obsessed with Brie cheese so we topped ours with smears of melted brie. we paired this with the greenest green salad also from the times cooking. It was a good leftovers dinner. I would make it again to use up extra ham, but I wouldn't make it again just to make this recipe.

Yummy flavors, but I was unfamiliar with radicchio before this and didn't realize it would be so bitter. I would recommend looking up some tips on how to make radicchio taste better...

Made a vegetarian version of this with tofurkey “bologna”....while not my fave substitute, I wanted to share with a non-meat eater...it came out GREAT. The sautéed radicchio & mustard are so satisfying.

Best way I have ever eaten radicchio. I've been doing something similar with cabbage (plus capers fried in butter). Sweated a mix of diced celery and onion in the pan first. I like to frizzle the ham to make it crispy. But take care not to burn the garlic if you turn up the heat for that. Delicious with or without bread. For a gooey treat I mixed in a soft-boiled egg.

This was such an easy weeknight dinner! The mustard is key here, I used a whole grain Dijon and it was the perfect amount of tangy perfection to lighten up the otherwise heaviness of the ham and bread. The only thing I'd change is that next time I'll soak the radicchio for a bit to remove some of the bitterness.

Toasted some sourdough bread with butter in the pan then topped with stone ground mustard. Also added some sauted onions to the mix. Delicious, easy meal!

Sourdough bread was a great suggestion. I used a coarse grain French mustard (Maille Old Style) and it really melded beautifully.

I'm thinking, skip the mustard and use vinegar instead. Would also be good with roast garlic spread on the toast.
