My 10 year old just finished a week of Dungeons & Dragons camp, and tonight at dinner, he declared ā€œIā€™m autistic *and* I have ADHD ā€” Iā€™m multiclassing!ā€ Adorable.
You dip one toe in the ESP32 pond and before you know it youā€™re swimming in dev boards, jumper wires, breadboards, rotary encoders, and tiny OLED displays. šŸ¤“
I just discovered dog toupees and, welp there goes my evening.
Stunned that Red Bull is sticking with Checo. Heā€™s got less than half the points of his teammate and has shown no signs of improvement. Not a Red Bull guy, so itā€™s at least good for the lols #F1
Finally some luck goes Charlesā€™ way. Pole position thanks to Maxā€™s grid penalty and Checoā€™s continued lagging performance compared to his teammate. Strong lap too, but itā€™s clear that the car is still way too slow. Hoping for a podium tomorrow! #F1
Having a blast tinkering with OpenHASP. I found a Waveshare ESP32 controller with an integrated touch screen, and itā€™s a perfect device for a small IoT project.
That said, if Kamala is the nominee, buckle up for a shitload of racism and misogyny from the other side. It is going to be a shitstorm of folks showing us precisely who they are.
Honestly they could nominate a six week old Subway meatball sandwich and Iā€™d still vote blue.
Also, how in the WORLD did Max not get penalized for colliding with Lewis? Or for gaining an advantage on lap one for that matter? Absolute garbage. Max can do anything he wants. #F1
The biggest takeaways from todayā€™s race: (1) McLaren is utterly foolishā€¦ one of the dumbest team orders in history (2) Verstappen is a baby #F1
Was driving today in LA and passed a strip mall that had a store with a bigass sign that just said ā€œWARHAMMER.ā€ I bet that store rules. šŸ˜‚
This season of The Boys couldnā€™t be more heavy-handed even if both of its hands were made of iridium. Woof.
Hopelessly addicted to the pineapple cake at Starbucks. Their coffee isnā€™t great, but that cake rules.
Watched the new Ghostbusters on my flight back to LA from New York today. Maybe blasphemous to say, butā€¦ I liked it a lot! Afterlife showed promise but didnā€™t pull it off. I think Frozen Empire did.
Experimenting with dirt cheap Android tablets has been very instructive and fun. It makes me want sideloading on iOS and iPad OS even more. Running Termux and a local, native X11 environment is fantastic. I hope the EU punches Apple into allowing sideloading.
Iā€™m convinced that ā€œundecidedā€ voters arenā€™t struggling to pick a candidate, theyā€™re struggling to decide if they should vote at all. I bet the vast majority of them would vote for Biden if they show up to the ballot box. Tell your friends and family that are disenchanted to hold their noses and vote for Biden.
But, Iā€™m almost writing off the rest of the season as a Ferrari fan. All of the momentum of the strong start has evaporated, the strategy blunders have returned, and the car is not improving. Such a shame. #F1
That has to be the race of the season, without a doubt. So many cars in contention, lots of overtaking, drama, strategy, and ultimately an incredible moment for Lewis after such a long wait. #F1
Finally got around to watching ā€œIndiana Jones and the Dial of Destinyā€ last night. I was pleasantly surprised by the first hour or so, and enjoyed the movie overall. I just wish that it didnā€™t veer into over the top sci-fi at the end. Worth a watch. āļø āļø āļø
Tri-tip, sweet potatoes, salad, and an ice cold beer. šŸ‡ŗšŸ‡ø
People proudly flying defaced American flags to show their support for fascism and white supremacy on July 4th is pretty on brand for America in 2024. Iā€™m encouraged by the elections across the pond. Maybe weā€™ll come out of this authoritarian moment eventually.
On a related #gaming note, I picked up a cheap expanding gamepad on AliExpress, and put it on a Amazon Fire HD 10 tablet, and itā€™s an awesome little device for streaming from my gaming PC with Moonlight and Sunshine.
Finished Baldurā€™s Gate 3 last night when I couldnā€™t sleep. I wasnā€™t sure about it when I started the game, but by the end I was having a blast. What should I play next?
Apparently, the Monaco curse didnā€™t die, it just turned into ā€œnothing good can happen to Charles Leclerc now that he has won Monaco.ā€ šŸ˜ #F1
I do hold out some hope that Ferrari will be much stronger on street circuits featuring more low speed corners like Singapore and Vegas. #F1
Genuinely irritated that Ferrari has the 4th fastest car at this stage of the season. Such a promising start, but since Monaco, itā€™s been a mess. Barring significant upgrades, itā€™ll be a P4 in the constructors. Ah, Ferrari fandom. #F1
Alright, episode five of The Boys S3 was far better than episode 4, which skeeved me out quite a bit. Back to a good balance this week, plus a bonus of a scene on a farm that Iā€™ll never forget.
Yeah, I donā€™t care, Iā€™m still voting for ā€œWeekend at Bidenā€™s.ā€
Okay, S3E4 of The Boys was officially ā€œtoo muchā€ for me. Really hard to watch.
Thanks you, LabCorp, for being so incredibly incompetent that you delayed my wifeā€™s chemo by an entire week, ruined our July 4th vacation plan, and caused her to have to endure yet another week of suffering. ā€˜Eff you very much, forever and ever.
Okay, this looks super cool. Eventually, when Apple makes a headset that doesnā€™t cost a hojillion dollars, I may actually buy one just for this. https://github.com/cbusillo/BD_to_AVP
Took the kids to see Inside Out 2 tonight. What a fantastic movie. The level of care taken to capture big, hairy emotional concepts like anxiety and sense of self was impressive. Iā€™ve never seen as effective a presentation of what itā€™s like to suffer from anxiety.
Years after Logitech killed the Harmony, there are *two* very promising universal remotes on Kickstarter. Unfolded Circleā€™s Remote 3 looks the most well-considered, and is where I am placing my bets, but I backed the Haptique RS90X as well. šŸ¤ž
New 311 slaps. Iā€™m so šŸ‘“
I hope all of the other engineers took the tvOS guy out to lunch to celebrate WWDC.
Last note on AI for today, w.r.t. energy. Every computer uses power. The apps we use, SaaS apps in data centers, etc. This is fine, provided that the use provides real utility. For crypto, energy complaints are relevant, as it provides little utility. If you give this first generation of AI tools a real shot at enhancing your day-to-day, youā€™ll quickly see real utility *now* and potential for even more. Push for renewables and regulation requiring data centers to reduce carbon footprint, donā€™t kneecap the future.
Also, the notion that you canā€™t have fantastic results with generative models training on only content you have permission to use is ridiculous. OpenAI and Meta are bad actors that are disengenuous. Its *easier* to get good results with ethical shortcuts, but you can acehieve amazing results without stealing.
Unsurprising, but also disappointing, to see a lot of scoffing at Appleā€™s AI announcements. Iā€™m excited for the future, especially if tech giants can drive ethical/responsible use of generative models to change our relationship with computers. Acknowledge the challenges and push for responsible use.
But, here we are, inching closer to the finish line. Weā€™re over the hump, and can see the light at the end of the tunnel. šŸ™
Chemo treatment 7 of 12 today for my wife. Treatment 6 was tough. She had to take an extra ā€œoffā€ week, which featured severe neutropenia and a late-night trip to the ER for emergency IV fluids, including antibiotics to prevent sepsis, and to address tachycardia and a scary 170+ heart rate.
