Another year of DiscoverU program at Royal Ontario Museum has wrapped up and we couldn't be more proud and excited for these 9 incredible youth who completed this 3 day, 20 hour program. Here are some snapshots from the first day - May 15th. This week, at a gathering attended by members of the Indigenous community from across the region, we shared the appointment of Rhéanne Chartrand as the inaugural Hatch Curator of Indigenous Art & Culture here at ROM. “I’m looking forward to working with my colleagues at ROM to ensure Indigenous peoples’ cultural sovereignty over how their belongings are cared for and shared,” Chartrand stated. We’re pleased to introduce the Global Sikh Art & Culture Gallery and Program at ROM; the first announced element of a planned full refurbishment and expansion of the Museum’s renowned suite of South Asian galleries as part of the transformative OpenROM project. For decades, ROM has worked with local communities to establish a strong South Asian presence within the Museum, resulting in the first endowed curatorship and gallery in Canada dedicated to South Asian Art and Culture. The Global Sikh Art & Culture Gallery and Program, situated within the broader Dan Mishra South Asian Initiative, will enable ROM to expand the Museum’s suite of galleries devoted to South Asia to include a dedicated Gallery of Sikh Art & Culture with related programming, performances, and a newly endowed curatorial position. The Global Sikh Art & Culture Gallery and Program is made possible through $16.6 million contributed by generous donors and an additional $6 million commitment from Canadian Heritage, as recently announced in the 2024 Federal Budget and subject to passing of the budget. https://lnkd.in/gR9QEp_q
