On the plugins screen in WP Admin, when you click 'View Version 12.0.0 details', then select the Change Log tab, the URL for Version 12 is:

This is interesting, I’ve updated the readme.txt in BP Trunk the right way: ​https://buddypress.trac.wordpress.org/browser/trunk/src/readme.txt

It’s the same file you find on WP Trunk ​https://plugins.trac.wordpress.org/browser/buddypress/trunk/readme.txt as well as 12.0 tag:
​https://plugins.trac.wordpress.org/browser/buddypress/tags/12.0.0/readme.txt

I guess it’s a polyglot issue, maybe a fuzzy string was wrongly validated.
