A quick refresher from our friends and partners at Wikimedia Foundation -- do you know who is in charge of content on Wikipedia, the Free Encyclopedia? Wikimedia Europe advocates for access to information and knowledge, because the more accessible it is, the better it helps volunteers to create fact-checked and well resourced Wikipedia articles that millions of people access everyday.

Wie gelingt es zivilgesellschaftlichen Organisationen, mehr Aufmerksamkeit und Verständnis für ihre Themen zu schaffen? Gerade die Übersetzung von digitalen und technologischen Anliegen ist häufig eine Herausforderung. Wie wäre es daher mit einem Blick auf bekannte und anschlussfähige Narrative? Fragen rund um Technologien, Künstliche Intelligenz und ihre gesellschaftlichen Auswirkungen sind immer häufiger Gegenstand von Filmen und Serien. Welche Inspirationen können wir als zivilgesellschaftliche Organisationen für unsere Kommunikation daraus ziehen? Zusammen mit Studierenden und Forschenden des Institute for Humanities an der Uniwersytet SWPS ist Wikimedia Europe tief in populäre Filme und Serien eingetaucht und hat analysiert, welche Geschichten von und über Mensch & Technik darin erzählt werden. Herausgekommen ist die Analyse „Visions of AI in Popular Culture: Analysis of the Narratives about Artificial Intelligence in Science Fiction Films and Series“ https://lnkd.in/e-tFR5_C --------- How can civil society organisations create more awareness and understanding for their issues? The translation of digital and technological issues in particular is often a challenge. So how about taking a look at familiar and connectable narratives? Issues relating to technology, artificial intelligence and their social impact are increasingly becoming the subject of films and series. What inspiration can we as civil society organisations draw from this for our communication? Together with students and researchers from the Institute for Humanities at Uniwersytet SWPS, Wikimedia Europe took a deep dive into popular films and series and analysed which stories of and about people and technology are told in them. 💫 Great memories are worth sharing! On May 24-25 I participated in the general assembly of Wikimedia Europe in Prague. It was (again) a great opportunity to meet some of the most committed and prominent Wikimedia Movement activists from Europe (and beyond) 🌍 Together with Tomasz Wszeborowski and Michał Buczyński (President and Vice President of Wikimedia Polska) we had a chance to join vibrant discussions, workshops and sessions dedicated to the most urgent and relevant #advocacy issues related to the future of #wikimedia, #internet, #FreeKnowledge and #OpenSource initiatives. It was also a great moment to discuss #governance and #fundraising topics related to Wikimedia affiliates and other organizations in the movement. Wikimedia Europe is doing a great job in explaining to regulators and decision-makers in the #EU and beyond the value of the open knowledge movement represented by Wikipedia, the Free Encyclopedia, its importance for #democracy and the #future of the Internet. Activists and organisations often have difficulties with raising awareness of the problems that they make it their mission to solve. What if we got inspiration from pop-culture and artworks that excel at translating the emerging tendencies and new technologies into the zeitgeist? Together with Uniwersytet SWPS Institute of Humanities in Warsaw, Poland, we delved into exactly this inspiration! Students worked under the direction of the faculty on data collection and report: Visions of AI in Popular Culture: Analysis of the Narratives about Artificial Intelligence in Science Fiction Films and Series. Why are we so bent on rediscovering this? We thought there is more that can be done to get people on board with our messages and campaigns. Pop culture operates on a buy-in principle. It is an invitation to be cool, to partake in the excitement. There are lessons and takeaways from this research that we will be exploring to make our work more effective. The research is fascinating. Conquest or progress, good teamwork and machines, the pursuit of happiness, making a family, new geographies, good citizens, political choice and rebellion, technology as a source of comfort -- these were the tropes under the scrutiny of the young researchers. All these are also important in digital rights -- after all technology is a growing factor on all areas of life. We were extremely happy to take part in the first global Wiki Advocacy meeting, which took place in Santiago de Chile from the 2nd to the 4th of March on the margins of the UNESCO World Press Freedom Day 2024. Such an inspirational meeting for our advocacy of free speech and free knowledge.

I see in this morning's news that the UK Anti-SLAPP Coalition is calling on the UK government to support amendments to the Strategic Litigation Against Public Participation (SLAPP) Bill. LexisNexis reports "The letter has been addressed to Justice Secretary, Alex Chalk, and signatories include editors, journalists, writers, publishers, academics and experts. The signatories have called on the government to refine the definition of 'public interest' to strengthen the legislation and address a flaw in the Bill's early dismissal mechanism which requires a court to make a subjective judgement in respect of a claimants intent to determine whether legal action can be identified as SLAPP. Additionally, signatories have highlighted concerns that deficiencies in the Economic Crime and Corporate Transparency Act 2023 have been replicated in the Anti-SLAPP Bill."
