Alcohol & Tobacco Commission, Indiana

Description:

The Indiana Alcoholic Beverage Commission was created by an Act of the Indiana General Assembly in 1933, following the repeal of Prohibition. Effective July 1, 2001, the name was changed to the Alcohol and Tobacco Commission. The Commission licenses and regulates over 15,000 permits for the manufacture, distribution or sale of alcoholic beverages at restaurants, breweries, wineries, grocery stores, hotels, drug stores, package stores, stadiums, civic centers, social and fraternal clubs, horse tracks and river boats throughout the State of Indiana. In addition to business alcoholic beverage permits, the Commission licenses and regulates the permits of every bartender, waiter, waitress, salesperson and clerk associated with the sale or service of alcoholic beverages in the State of Indiana - over 200,000 in number. The Commission also licenses and regulates nearly 8,500 tobacco retailers, distributors and manufacturers.

Animal Health, Indiana State Board of

Animals have contributed a lot to Indiana's history, providing food, income, recreation, assistance and companionship to millions of Hoosiers everyday. State lawmakers recognized the value of those relationships in 1889, when they created the office of the State Veterinarian and the Livestock Sanitary Commission. Today, that commission, now known as the Board of Animal Health (BOAH), operates under the direction of an 11-member Board of animal industry professionals who meet quarterly to set agency policy. While the original mission to prevent and suppress contagious and infectious diseases among the livestock, has not changed in over 100 years, the scope of BOAH's work has expanded

The State Budget Agency is charged with the duty and responsibility of serving as fiscal analyst, administrative budget officer, fiscal forecaster and fiscal policy advisor to the Governor. By statute, the Governor appoints the State Budget Director and two Deputy Directors. The Budget Agency facilitates the processes of revenue forecasting and budget development and implementation. The agency is also responsible for evaluating the fiscal and policy impacts of legislative proposals and making this information available to decision makers. Each biennium, the agency compiles fiscal data from state agencies and works with the legislature to develop the State’s budget.

Charter School Board, Indiana

Description:

In May 2011, House Enrolled Act 1002 was passed by the Indiana legislature and signed into law by Indiana Governor Mitch Daniels. Among other provisions, HEA 1002 established the Indiana Charter School Board, a new charter school authorizer established for the purpose of sponsoring charter schools around the state. Per IC § 20-24-2.1, the purpose of the board is to (1) review a proposal to establish a charter school; (2) make a decision on the proposal as required; (3) monitor charter schools sponsored by the charter board; and (4) publish guidelines concerning the review process. The Indiana Charter School Board (“ICSB”) was established as an independent state agency.

As one of three co-equal branches of state government, the General Assembly is responsible for enacting the laws by which the state of Indiana is governed. The two houses of the General Assembly (House and Senate) were created at the time Indiana became a state in 1816. The current makeup of the General Assembly, consisting of 100 Representatives serving 2-year terms and 50 Senators serving 4-year terms, was established in the Constitution of 1851. Indiana’s Commission for Higher Education is the coordinating agency charged with ensuring the state’s postsecondary education system is aligned to meet the needs of students and the state. Created in 1971 by an act of the General Assembly and signed into law by then Governor Edgar Whitcomb, the Indiana Commission for Higher Education is now in its fifth decade of service to the State of Indiana. The Indiana Department of Homeland Security (IDHS) leads Indiana's emergency planning and operations, first responder training and fire and building safety. The Indiana State Fire Marshal leads the Division of Fire and Building Safety (within IDHS), which oversees the enforcement of building codes and includes a fire investigations unit. The agency certifies and trains thousands of first responders and also hosts state-level exercises each year. IDHS also supports the state Emergency Operations Center (EOC), which leads response and coordination efforts for large-magnitude incidents.

Hoosier Lottery

Integrated Public Safety Commission

The Integrated Public Safety Commission (IPSC) is the governing body that oversees Project Hoosier SAFE-T. IPSC, created by the Indiana General Assembly in 1999, consists of 12 members representing a variety of public safety agencies, along with municipal and county executives. Unlike its federal counterpart, the Indiana Department of Labor does not have authority or responsibility over Workforce Development or Workers' Compensation, each of which exist independently in Indiana. Law Enforcement Academy, Indiana

Indiana's center for law enforcement education. The first basic law enforcement training course was conducted in the summer of 1969 at Indiana Central College, now the University of Indianapolis. In December of 1969, the Academy moved to the Indiana University campus at Bloomington, and remained there until January 1, 1975. On January 6, 1975 training began in the new facility at Plainfield.

Lieutenant Governor, Indiana

Description:

This page is maintained and dedicated to the acting Lieutenant Governor of Indiana. The office of lieutenant Governor was created by Article 5, Sec. 2 of the Indiana Constitution. The term of office is four years, the same as that of the governor. Candidates for lieutenant governor are nominated at an annual party convention. The party's nominees for governor and lieutenant governor then run as a team, ensuring that those elected will be of the same political party and governing philosophy. Under the Indiana Constitution, the lieutenant governor is charged with presiding over the Senate during its session, as well as casting deciding votes in the event of a tie. In addition, the lieutenant governor is charged with assuming the role of governor if the sitting governor becomes unable to fulfill the duties of office or if the office falls vacant due to death.

The Indiana War Memorial Plaza Historic District, in the heart of downtown Indianapolis, is composed of predominantly Neoclassical buildings and structures, landscaped open space, and sculptural ensembles. The district is flanked on the west by Meridian Street, the primary north-south route running through the center of the city and on the east by Pennsylvania Street. Because of its location between two primary north-south traffic arteries, the Plaza provides a monumental entrance to the Indianapolis business district from the north.
