Dear Polly 02:58
Oh Polly, my Polly your whispering voice fills my heart, Through long separation I conjure you when we're apart In mumbling coaches I chatter with strangers for days But what a man needs is his hearth and his chair and his wife's tender ways Dear Polly, my Polly Dear Polly, my Polly my love I send to thee while I'm far away from thee. Oh Johnny my Johnny the sight of you changed me quite When first I beheld you at my parents' house that dark night So young and so shy all I wanted to do was to hide So I waited and waited and waited for you for to be your bride Dear Johnny, my Johnny Dear Johnny, my Johnny These words I send to you when you're far away from me. Oh Polly my Polly there's something so close in what you write So pertinent dearest I see that you walk in the light It fills me with joy when I read that you watch and you pray May the good Lord keep you safe while I'm away Dear Polly, my Polly Dear Polly, my Polly my love I send to thee while I'm far away from thee. Dear Johnny, my Johnny Dear Johnny, my Johnny These words I send to you when you're far away from me.

Can you sail the fierce sea, can you plough the wild main? Can you ride the rough waves like some venturesome blade? Can you sleep 'neath the deck of the vessel of thain? for when that you do you'll master your trade. Can you leave your own family and loved ones behind For the true and viscous men and a captain likewise? Can you face the flog and the lash and ner be afraid? for when that you do you shall master your trade Can you sail to distant lands to a far foreign shore Plunder realms without mercy claim your spoils of war Stealing souls for you chattles, their lives to decayed? for when that you do you shall master your trade Can you abuse your fellow man lead him shackled in chains and can you brutalise and violate, disregard their cries of pain? can you cast them overboard to a watery grace? for when that you do you shall master your trade

Grace will lead me home Grace will lead me home Like a candle in the dark It's Grace that will lead me home Grace will lead me home Grace will lead me home When the fire's just a spark It's Grace that will lead me home When you feel like a ship that is rudderless When you feel like a child that is motherless When you feel overwhelmed by the otherness It's Grace that will lead me home When they blame you when things go wrong and they look at you like you are always the guilty one and you know that you'd never, never hurt no-one It's Grace that will lead me home Grace will lead me home Grace will lead me home Like a candle in the dark It's Grace that will lead me home Grace will lead me home Grace will lead me home When the fire's just a spark It's Grace that will lead me home When you've read every single book when you've aced every one of those tests you've took and you're turned down and you're constantly overlooked It's Grace that will lead me home Oh Amazing, Amazing Grace it makes my heart sing Oh amazing power divine Oh Amazing, Amazing Grace this wonderful thing It is yours and it is mine Grace will lead me home Grace will lead me home Like a candle in the dark It's Grace that will lead me home Grace will lead me home Grace will lead me home When the fire's just a spark It's Grace that will lead me home

Oh rat a tat tat it's my friend John He strides through the woods with his great clogs on He could have come last eve, my torments to reprieve Sometimes a man just needs a little space and time to breathe John doesn't get that Oh rat a tat tat. Oh ring a ding ding John's at my bell imagining I'm in mortal hell Today my mortal dread is all in dear John's head and all I want is peace to sup my tea and bite me bread but no such thing, oh ring a ding ding. Turn round Newton trudge through the mud on the orchard floor Turn round Newton, If I wanted to see you I'd open the door. Please stop that riot, I need some quiet Oh ring a ding ding, he's imagining things I politely refuse, you'll scare my muse, I must decline, turn around I'm fine oh rat a tat tat.

A young man came to a house of prayer They did not ask what brought him there He was not friend; he was not kin But they opened the door and let him in And for an hour the stranger stayed He sat with them and seemed to pray But then the young man drew a gun And killed nine people, old and young In Charleston in the month of June The mourners gathered in a room The President came to speak some words And the cameras rolled and the nation heard But no words could say what must be said For all the living and the dead So on that day and in that place The President sang Amazing Grace The President sang Amazing Grace We argued where to lay the blame On one man's hate or our nation's shame Some sickness of the mind or soul And how the wounds might be made whole But no words could say what must be said For all the living and the dead So on that day and in that place The President sang Amazing Grace My President sang Amazing Grace

See the foul-mouthed drunken sailor and the Jonah on the deck see him abandoned to the storm see him sinking with the wreck hear him bargaining with God and calling to his wife hear him promising his future if God would save his life I see bodies in the water see the waves close over his face hear him crying out for mercy hear him crying out for grace see God's hand scoop him up see the big man washed up on the beach now God's hand is his pulpit I'm going to hear John Newton preach I’m going to hear John Newton preach Pack the Africans with the livestock and hope enough of them survive if they’re crying down below at least you know they’re alive The slaves disembark leave a trail of blood across the quay while the Captain’s in his cabin talk about how Grace can set you free It makes the heart shudder how dark a soul can be liberate the oppressed and set the captain’s slaves free Now the church doors are open hear the faithful sing each to each change the law and change the world I am going to hear John Newton preach I’m going to hear John Newton preach Hear him preach the love of God for a wretch like me how the slave in my soul can be set free hear his voice ring in Heaven for the wretched and the poor how the smallest key can unlock the largest door hear him tell how cold winter can turn suddenly to spring how God’s Amazing grace can break the ice from within when you’re running from God’s love you are never out of reach Now God’s love is his pulpit I’m going to hear John Newton preach I’m going to hear John Newton preach

Newton is still sailing with a ship full of slaves while beneath the London streets Stephen Lawrence is in his grave The Devil plays the king we want God to play the ace and the choir still sings Amazing Grace Work the slave to death and hang his body in a tree feeding the birds of the air dripping poppies of the field Mary in the garden with her tears and widow's lace singing hymns to the morning hear her sing Amazing Grace When you get arrested for being in the wrong place and you are convicted by virtue of your race when hope turns to hopeless light a candle in the dark and let that still small voice sing Amazing Grace I'm no slave but I'm too poor to be free and who is going to save a wretch like me? When home ain't no more because the fire burned this place and even the refugee sings Amazing Grace I'm lost and I'm lonely where the homeless people roam but I live in hope that Grace will lead me home I look at the world and tears run down my face but there's a song in my heart called Amazing Grace

Amazing grace, how sweet the sound That saved a wretch like me. I once was lost, but now I am found, Was blind, but now I see. 'Twas grace that taught my heart to fear, And grace my fears relieved. How precious did that grace appear The hour I first believed. Through many dangers, toils and snares I have already come, 'Tis grace has brought me safe thus far And grace will lead me home. The Lord has promised good to me His word my hope secures; He will my shield and portion be, As long as life endures. Yea, when this flesh and heart shall fail, And mortal life shall cease I shall possess within the veil, A life of joy and peace. The earth shall soon dissolve like snow, The sun forbear to shine; But God, who called me here below, Will be forever mine.

Paul and Silas bound in jail Had no money to go their bail Keep your eyes on the prize Hold on Paul and Silas thought They was lost Dungeon shook and The chains come off Keep your eyes on the prize Hold on Freedom's name is mighty sweet And soon we're going to meet Keep your eyes on the prize Hold on I got my hand on the gospel plow Won't take nothing for My journey now Keep your eyes on the prize Hold on Hold on, Hold on Keep your eyes on the prize Hold on Only chain that a man can stand Is that chain of hand and hand Keep your eyes on the prize Hold on I'm going to board That big Greyhound Carry the love from Town to town Keep your eyes on the prize Hold on Hold on, Hold on Keep your eyes on the prize Hold on The only thing I did was wrong Was staying in the Wilderness too long Keep your eyes on the prize Hold on The only thing we did was right Was the day we started to fight Keep your eyes on the prize hold on Hold on, Hold on Keep your eyes on the prize Hold on Hold on, Hold on Keep your eyes on the prize Hold on Hold on, Hold on Keep your eyes on the prize Hold on

about

Angeline Morrison (The Sorrow Songs), Cohen Braithwaite-Kilcoyne (Granny's Attic) and Jon Bickley (The Invisible Folk Club) came together to create a new album marking the 250th anniversary of the writing of Amazing Grace (2023) and the 300th anniversary of the birth of its writer John Newton (2025).

Jon Bickley headed a partnership between Invisible Folk, the Arts Council and the Cowper & Newton Museum in a project entitled 'Grace will lead me home.' It explored the love that people have for Amazing Grace including those who are descended from the slaves that Newton shipped across the Atlantic. Interviews covering every aspect of Newton's life, the slave trade and the evolution of the beloved hymn was undertaken (including Judy Collins) and these can be found in a series of podcasts invisiblefolk.com/grace-will-lead-me-home

Cohen and Angeline were invited to join the project, review the research, meet the folks at the museum and write new songs. Cohen had written 'Black Singers and Ballads' www.efdss.org/learning/resources/a-z/10482-black-singers-resource-output# and played on the Reg Meuross project 'Stolen from God.' Angeline had released 'The Brown Girl and Other Folk Songs' and 'The Sorrow Songs' to considerable acclaim. Both artists brought the weight of their study as well as considerable artistic talents to the project.

One of the first things the group did upon first meeting was to respond to a request from the museum. The tune we have come to associate with 'Amazing Grace' is called 'New Britain' but it did not become associated with the song until 70 years after the words were written. In the meantime, it had many tunes, one of which was 'Jesu thy word is my delight.' The live recording on the album is the band singing that arrangement on the morning after the request from the museum. They also recorded 'Eyes on the Prize' and the more familiar version of Amazing Grace on that first meeting. Angeline also sang a beautiful version of Zoe Mulford's song 'The President sang Amazing Grace.'

Three months later the group reassembled to record and perform the new songs. Angeline brought 'Turn round Newton' a song about Newton's relationship with William Cowper and 'Grace will lead me home' which she performed with a children's choir in the courtyard of the Cowper & Newton Museum. These songs have echoes of Doo-wop and other music of the Afro Caribbean diaspora. She also brought 'Dear Polly' a song taken from Newton's copious letters to his wife.

Cohen brought the profound and arresting 'Press Gang Song.' This song gradually reveals the everyday acceptance of the violence and brutality of the transatlantic slave trade and is delivered with Cohen's trademark intensity. He also brought 'Fantasia on a West Indian Burial Theme' a new composition which includes a melody that would have been played at the funerals of slaves. Cohen's musical influence on the project was so strong that after the first day Jon referred to him as 'Maestro.'

Jon's contribution to the project is 'I'm going to hear John Newton preach' which traces Newton's life from slave trader to conversion to preacher to abolitionist. 'The choir still sings Amazing Grace' is an imaginative panorama of different places 'Amazing Grace' pops up. He also wrote 'Sorry' an impatient demand that today's leaders should own their countries’ past so that we can move towards reparation and healing and that starts by saying Sorry.
