WILL KICK START THEIR THREE DAY JOURNEY ACROSS SOUTH CAROLINA. IT’S THE 16TH ANNUAL RIDE TO END ALS, RAISING MONEY AND AWARENESS FOR THE STATE CHAPTER OF THE ALZHEIMER’S ASSOCIATION. JANE ROBELOT CAUGHT UP WITH OUR OWN GEOFF HART AND TEAM HEART STRONG, WHO ARE RIDING ONCE AGAIN. IT IS A STORY ALL NEW. AT SIX MAKE MAKE IT GOOD. OH, WHAT HAPPENED THERE? CROQUET IS THE NEW SPORT OF CHOICE FOR OUR FORMER SPORTS DIRECTOR AND NEWS ANCHOR. IN 2021, THE 28 YEAR VETERAN OF WIFE, FOUR, LEFT TELEVISION AFTER A DIAGNOSIS OF ALZHEIMER’S. WOW. A SIT DOWN INTERVIEW ISN’T SO COMFORTABLE FOR JEFF ANYMORE, SO WE ENJOYED CATCHING UP ON THE CROQUET LAWN. YEAH, I GOTTA SAY, YOU KNOW, I WAS THINKING IT’S GOING TO BE EASY HERE, BUT WHAT? OKAY, SO I WON THE CROQUET, BUT HE’S PEDALING 257 MILES ACROSS SOUTH CAROLINA WITH WIFE. FOUR’S TEAM, HEART STRONG AND FOR THE THIRD STRAIGHT YEAR, WE’RE MOVING EVEN WITH THE DIAGNOSIS, YOU CAN DO SOMETHING NEW. YOU KNOW, YOU DON’T JUST SIT BACK AND SAY, THAT’S THE END. WHAT ELSE CAN YOU DO? I THINK JEFF’S DOCTORS AND ALL FOUR HEART CHILDREN ARE ALL IN. YEAH, WE’RE RALLYING AROUND HIM LIKE CRAZY. UM, YOU KNOW, BECAUSE HE CAN. BECAUSE HE CAN DO THIS. WE SHOULD DO THIS. THE HEART’S ALWAYS ENJOYED BIKING TOGETHER, BUT JEFF’S DIAGNOSIS PUT THAT PASSION INTO HIGH GEAR. WHEN YOU HEAR THIS DIAGNOSIS, YOU DON’T JUST STOP. AND. YEAH. IS IT PARALYZING? YEAH, BUT AT THAT POINT, YOU CHOOSE HOW YOU’RE GOING TO PROCEED, RIGHT? I HAVE A GREAT RIDE. THANK YOU. TEAM HEART STRONG HAS BEEN TRAINING INTENSELY FOR THE PAST SIX MONTHS, BUT HE’S ALSO SURROUNDED BY THESE AWESOME PEOPLE AND EVERYBODY’S WATCHING OUT FOR EACH OTHER. Hundreds of cyclists began a three-day ride on Friday, crossing 257 miles through South Carolina from Simpsonville to Charleston.The Ride to End ALZ — a feat of endurance in the middle of summer — is all to raise money and awareness for the South Carolina chapter of the Alzheimer's Association. He is one of two people with the diagnosis to participate in this year's ride. The entire Hart clan will be cheering, as well as volunteering, along the entire route."With this disease, you do not know what the progression is going to look like," Geoff's wife Sarah said. "So yes, we are rallying around him like crazy because he can, because he can do this -- we should do this."The whole family has always supported Geoff's ride and they say his doctors at Emory University Hospital in Atlanta also encourage him to continue to his rigorous fitness training. "It's not for him," Sarah said. "It is for all of the people who have this disease, all of the people who want a cure, all of the people who have their own story. And so it's a huge, huge universe of people. We're just a little part of that."Team HartStrong has a goal of raising $50,444 this year.The South Carolina chapter's goal is $1,500,000. That's after surpassing a goal of $1,000,000 last year.Donations can be made in the name of the donor or to remember, support and honor someone who is coping with the disease by visiting the HartStrong donation page here.All the money raised goes to the Alzheimer's Association to be used in fighting the disease and raising awareness.
