TWO VOLUNTEERS WITH THE SALVATION ARMY, CENTRAL ALABAMA, HAVE STARTED THE TEN HOUR JOURNEY TO HOUSTON, TEXAS. THE PLAN IS TO HELP FAMILIES WHO HAVE LOST POWER AFTER HURRICANE BERYL RAVAGED THROUGH THE AREA. ROBERT LYLE, THE AREA COMMANDER FOR THE LOCAL ORGANIZATION, SAYS ON NORMAL DISASTER DEPLOYMENTS, CREWS LEAVE IN TRUCKS PREPARED TO FEED 300 PEOPLE IN THIS CASE, THERE’S A WAREHOUSE WITH FOOD ALREADY PREPARED DOWN THERE SO THEIR TEAM WILL SHOW UP TO SERVE HOT FOOD AND COLD DRINKS TO THOSE WHO DON’T HAVE ELECTRICITY. WE GO FOR TWO WEEK DEPLOYMENTS, BASICALLY TEN DAYS A DAY, TRAVEL A DAY BACK. SO THEY’RE GOING BETWEEN 12 AND 14 DAYS. OUR UNIT LEFT TODAY. THEIR PROJECTED RETURN, UNLESS IT CLEANS UP A LITTLE BIT QUICKER, WILL BE THE 24TH. LYLE SAYS SHOULD HOUSTON ASK FOR MORE VOLUNTEERS, THEY’RE PREPARED TO SEND TWO MORE PEOPLE, HE SAYS. The Salvation Army in Central Alabama is the latest group to send help to Houston after Hurricane Beryl left over a million people without power. Now, a team of two is making the ten-hour journey to Texas to help serve hot food to families who don't have electricity.Robert Lyle, the Area Commander for the local organization, says that on normal disaster deployments, crews leave in trucks prepared to feed 300 people. In this case, there's a warehouse with food already prepared. When the team arrives, they will serve hot food and cold drinks."We go on 10-day deployments," Lyle said. "A day to travel there, a day to travel back. So basically 12 to 14 days. Today, they're projected to return on the 24th, unless they clean up a little quicker."Lyle says that should Houston ask for more volunteers, they are prepared to send two more people once the initial team returns.
