200 roosters found during Santa Cruz County cockfighting ring bust
The Santa Cruz County Sheriff's Office said that they broke up a cockfighting ring in the Santa Cruz Mountains on Tuesday.
At around 11:45 a.m. deputies were dispatched for a welfare check near 30000 Highland Way near the Summit. While in the area, they found an unrelated cockfighting pit.
A search warrant was immediately written and obtained approval. Most of the night was then spent searching the property, said a sheriff's office spokesperson.
Deputies and Animal Control officers found ten firearms and around 200 roosters. The roosters had been "mutilated" to attach cockfighting knives, said the spokesperson.
Juan Buenrostro Ochoa, 40, was arrested in connection with the case. The investigation is ongoing.
