Creating a personal garden helps fight food insecurity, saves money, and is more manageable than it may seem.It's time to start growing with Brya. Recently, she was at Kansas City Community Gardens, embarking on a journey to learn the basics of gardening. Despite not being naturally gifted with a green thumb, Brya is eager for the challenge. She found support from Rob Shoffner, a seasoned gardener from KCCG who will show her what it takes to grow food.An essential aspect of successful gardening is choosing the right location. The ideal spot includes access to water and approximately 8 hours of daily sunlight.Rob points out, "We have access to water here, eight hours of sun here, and this is where you're going to garden this year."After selecting the perfect garden bed, the next step is soil preparation. Rob advises removing all weeds and loosening the soil with garden tools to create an optimal environment for planting seeds and plants when the time comes.This is just the first step in a season-long journey to learning what it takes to successfully grow food in your own garden.
