Morality and Difficulty
The morality and the difficulty systems are directly linked in Vampyr.
The more evil you become, i.e. the more Citizens that you kill off, the easier the game becomes. The reason for this is that the citizens in Vampyr are worth a LOT more XP than general enemies are. Citizens can be worth up to 6000 XP, while normal enemies are worth between 5 and 15. This means that killing Citizens will actually allow you more exploration of Jonathan's powers and will make the game easier. This does come at a cost though, but that will be explained later in this section.
Vampiric Senses
Jonathan's Vampire Senses (Left Stick Click) can be used for a multitude of things throughout the game.
The primary use for it include identifying Citizens and their Blood Level, as well as enemies and their various resistances. It also comes into play for locating and following blood trails during missions, main and side.
Districts
Vampyr's world map is broken up into 4 distinct, separate districts: The Docks, Pembroke Hospital, Whitechapel, and the West End.
Each of these districts has its own set of citizens and side missions, and functions more or less independent of the others, with the exception of a few citizens who will cross borders during the course of the game. If you would like to learn more about these citizens, check out our page on NPCs for more information!
Each District contains a number of Citizens that all function to keep the District's Health Status up. At the center of every District is a Pillar; these individuals offer a large amount of XP when meeting them during the main story. But be warned, the death of a Pillar prevents that District from ever reaching the Sanitized level of 100%.
At the same time, Citizens will occasionally come down with any number of diseases, ranging from fatigue to neuralgia. Curing Citizens of any diseases in time with the right treatment keeps them alive and slightly raises the District's Health Status.
Mesmerize and NPCs
Vampyr allows you to choose to kill off any named citizen that you interact with in the districts. In fact, doing so makes the game easier and allows for greater exploration of Jonathan's powers. It's not quite as simple as it sounds, though.
In order to kill off a citizen, you must have your Mesmerize level at LEAST as high as the citizen's resistance level. For example, if you want to kill off a citizen that has a resistance level of 3, you must be at least at level 3 Mesmerize in order to Embrace them. Also keep in mind that if you kill off a citizen, you will no longer be able to interact with them or complete side quests for them. This will also lower the health of the district that they are from and might even put the district into chaos depending on who the person is!
Jonathan's Mesmerize is leveled up over the course of the game's main story. It will advance to the following levels at certain points such as:
- Level 2 - After deciding Dorothy Crane's fate in Chapter 2
- Level 3 - After deciding Sean Hampton's fate in Chapter 3
- Level 4 - After joining the Ascalon Club in Chapter [?]
- Level 5 - After deciding Aloysius Dawson's fate in Chapter [?]
