Mafia 3 is one of the most underrated games ever made in my opinion. The world they created is very detailed in every way. The 60s Louisianan city feels alive and is full of atmosphere. The music of the era just fits into the picture perfectly, while speeding through the city in a muscle car towards our next target. The story is your typical "you should have killed me while you had the chance" revenge story, but told in a pretty unique way, through interviews and archive records. The gameplay is a mix of driving, shooting and being sneaky. Stealth is optional but its much recommended as it not only makes the game easier, but the stealth kill animations are brutal and satisfying. The gunplay is not great, but its not annoying either. The driving can feel a bit sluggish, it really does depend on the car you are driving. The main criticism the game got was the mission progression system as it forces you to do the same tasks over and over again in order to progress the story. However, if you are smart about it, you can get through these repetitive missions relatively quickly by going after "high value" targets. I think this structure fits well within the story as the protagonist systematically takes the rival organisation apart piece by piece. I really liked the characters and the writing, the conversations didn't feel too "video gamey" at all. The DLCs are good too, with each of them adding some extra activity to the main game upon completion. It took me 45hrs to complete the game and all this time I have only encountered a handful of bugs, but nothing that a load back to checkpoint couldn't solve. Since the autosave mechanic is quite generous, I never lost much progress. Mafia 3 is a worthy sequel to its predecessors in my eyes, I hope one day people will give it the credit it deserves.

Mafia 3's fantastic story and characters are held down by some familiar, uninspired gameplay.
