DOS opportunities open to the public are posted on the NYS centralized job posting site. Go to the “For the General Public” section. Using “Search Vacancies”, job seekers can narrow their search with multiple filters, including title, agency, occupational category, region, and minimum salary requirement.

Civil Service Examinations (NYS Dept. of Civil Service)
Most jobs in DOS are filled from civil service lists that result from competitive examinations. Job seekers can sign up for email alerts for announced exams, and can view a tentative schedule of upcoming exams.

Professional Career Opportunities (PCO) Exam
Many entry level professional titles, in a variety of program areas in DOS, are filled from this frequently held examination. Minimum qualifications include any bachelor’s degree for Generalist Titles, and a specialized bachelor’s degree and sometimes specific work experience for Select Titles. Many appointments are made to traineeships that provide targeted training and development to groom employees for long term success with the agency.

Entry level positions in DOS filled off the Generalist Title list include jobs in the fields of Administration, Administrative Analysis, Budgeting, Business Systems Analysis, Contract Management, Human Resources, and Training. In addition, the Generalist Title list is used to fill positions of License Examination Specialist in our Division of Licensing Services.

Entry level positions in DOS filled off the Select Title list include jobs in the fields of Accounting and Internal Audit. In addition, the Select Title list is used to fill positions of Coastal Resources Specialist in our Office of Planning and Development.

Continuous Recruitment Exam for Professional Engineers
For candidates in the engineering field, applications are accepted continuously for an evaluation of education and experience. Positions are filled in the Division of Building Standards and Codes.

Continuous Recruitment Exam for Legal Specialties
For candidates in the legal field, applications are accepted continuously for an evaluation of education and experience. Positions are filled in the Office of General Counsel.

Eligible List Management System (ELMS)
Job seekers use a personalized portal to apply for civil service examinations, view results, and manage profiles, including geographic and other preferences for positions, and responses to list canvasses.

Opportunities for Veterans and Individuals with Disabilities (NYS Dept. of Civil Service)
This valuable program provides for opportunities for qualified applicants with disabilities, including disabled veterans, to compete for entry level positions in state government without the requirement of a civil service exam.

Veterans’ Temporary Hiring Program (NYS Dept. of Civil Service)
While most job opportunities in DOS are permanent positions, we occasionally fill jobs on a temporary basis. This program assists veterans will applying for temporary positions in a variety of state agencies.
