15 Reasons You Need to Visit the Historic Houses of Fairmount Park for “A Very Philly Christmas”

Looking for a unique way to celebrate the holidays this winter season? Look no further than “A Very Philly Christmas” at the historic houses of Fairmount Park!

1.  This is the 45th year of “Christmas in Fairmount Park,” a longtime Philadelphia tradition of decorating the historic houses of Fairmount Park for the holidays.

2.  This year, the new theme is “A Very Philly Christmas,” a special celebration showcasing what makes Philadelphia stand out: great music, delicious food and friendly neighbors.

3.  Six of the park’s treasured historic houses will be decked out in the season’s finest for four special events on December 3, 4, 9 and 10. Featured houses include Cedar Grove, Laurel Hill Mansion, Lemon Hill Mansion, Mount Pleasant, Strawberry Mansion, and Woodford Mansion.

4.  The historic houses of Fairmount Park were named one of “America’s Top Holiday Home Tours” for 2015 by Architectural Digest. The houses are some of the best-preserved examples of 18th and 19th century early American architecture, all located in one of the country’s most beautiful urban parks.

5.  The musical diversity of the city will be celebrated with performances by Opera Philadelphia, the Black Pearl Chamber Orchestra, Artístas y Músicos Latino Americanos, the Philadelphia Clef Club of Jazz and the Performing Arts, doo wop group “The Quiet Storm,” and the Mummers.
Sounds of the Season: Saturday, December 3, 10am-4pm

6.  Parks on Tap will return for one night! This special holiday version of the popular traveling beer garden will be held outside of Historic Strawberry Mansion during Sounds of the Season on Saturday, December 3, 12-5pm.

7.  Children and their parents can embrace a full day of entertainment and activities at Family Day, including holiday storytelling Walnut Street Theatre, puppet-making with Spiral Q Puppet Theater, Make a Joyful Noise with Mornin’ Music, decorations craft workshop with Smith Memorial Playground and Playhouse, Make Snow! with the Franklin Institute and visits from the Philly Phanatic, Santa Claus and more!
Family Day: Sunday, December 4, 10am-4pm

8.  The historic houses will showcase the many talents of the neighbors who live near and around Fairmount Park.
Neighbor’s Day: Saturday, December 10, 10am-4pm

9.  You’ll be able to sample holiday delights from local food superstars, including City Tavern, Shane’s Confectionery, John and Kira’s Chocolates, Giambri’s Quality Sweets, Sweetzels Bakery, Whole Foods, Yard’s Brewery, and more.
Flavors of the Season: Sunday, December 11, 10am-4pm 

10.  It’s easily accessible! Drive and park at one of the houses for free, or ride the Holiday Houses Loop on the Philly PHLASH. Simply board a comfortable and heated PHLASH at the west entrance of the Art Museum and enjoy all five houses in East Fairmount Park.

11.  Admission for children 12 and under is free! All other visitors can participate for $8 per house, online or payable at the door. Purchase a discounted pass to see all six historic houses on any of the four special event days for only $35.

12.  Festivities will be happening throughout the entire month of December! Stop by the historic houses and see the decorations inspired by “A Very Philly Christmas” at the Christmas Open Houses. Admission is $8 per house, and reservations are not required.
Christmas Open House: December 1-31, 10am-4pm 

13.  You’ll have the opportunity to take part in exclusive candlelit tours of three festively-decorated houses! Friendly and knowledgeable guides will share the rich and interesting history of the residents who called Laurel Hill Mansion, Woodford Mansion and Strawberry Mansion home. The tours conclude with assorted hors d’oeuvres and desserts at Strawberry Mansion.

14.  You’ll learn a lot of rich history of Fairmount Park on the Trolley Tours! 
Be part of a cherished Philadelphia tradition by touring the historic houses of Fairmount Park exquisitely decorated for the holidays. Hop aboard the festive trolley to hear from knowledgeable and engaging guides as they lead you to three historic houses.

15.  It’s for a good cause! Proceeds from the events support the ongoing stewardship, maintenance and promotion of these treasures.
