What are the most effective ways to succeed as a startup employee?
One overarching word comes to mind - 'curiosity'. If you're curious and go above and beyond to constantly identify what you don't know, and what your founder doesn't know, and then learn and apply that skill, you'll fly within a startup. Things are not served up on a platter in most startups - onboarding is messy, founders can be all over the place juggling multiple work-streams, company direction changes, etc.; if you arrive at work excited each day about what might happen (vs. the certainty of what will happen), it makes it easier to embrace the rollercoaster.

How can you manage stress and uncertainty as a startup founder or employee?
Startup founders are often not meant to also be investors, as these carry two totally different mindsets. So if you're bootstrapping your startup, it's critical to leave your investor hat at the door when engaging with your employees as the startup founder; they will feel the inherent stress of ROI, monthly cash flow injections, etc. and it will permeate throughout the team.

How can you create a workplace culture that discourages microaggressions?
Microaggressions are often the result of not properly venting the actual underlying issue or unhappiness. Rather encourage an environment of microexpressions where your team are encouraged to share and speak exactly what's on their minds in the moment without fear of repercussions.

How can you avoid common active listening mistakes in a diverse team?
Put an end to the mistakes by asking the listener to 1) agree/disagree and why and/or 2) repeat their understanding of the brief. As a bonus, insist on questions being asked around the brief; you'll very quickly know who was paying attention and who was drifting off.
