X-Men '97 Reportedly Hires What If...? Writer Matthew Chauncey for Season 3

Series creator Beau DeMayo completed work on the first two seasons before he was fired.

Marvel has reportedly hired What If...? writer Matthew Chauncey for Season 3 of the Disney+ animated series X-Men '97.

As reported by Deadline, Chauncey was writer and executive story editor for What If...? and worked on 15 episodes in total. He also wrote a teleplay for the Disney+ miniseries Ms. Marvel and was a script doctor for the 2022 film Thor: Love & Thunder.

The script for X-Men '97 Season 2 has reportedly been revised and is currently in production, with Season 3's development underway. Series creator Beau DeMayo had already completed his work on the first two seasons before he was fired a week before the show premiered.

DeMayo said he had written "a lot" of X-Men '97 Season 2 but would not be heavily involved in the production of the upcoming season.

X-Men '97 is a revival and sequel series for X-Men: The Animated Series. Some of the original cast members, such as Cal Dodd and Lenore Zann, reprise their roles for the revival. The first season premiered on Disney+ on March 20, 2024.

In our 9/10 review of X-Men '97's first season, my colleague Jesse Schedeen wrote: "X-Men '97 isn't just a fitting continuation of X-Men: The Animated Series, but one of the best adaptations ever of this iconic Marvel franchise."
