New Israeli military report admits Oct. 7 failures
Israeli Defense Minister Yoav Gallant called for a state inquiry after the military admitted in a new report that it failed to protect a kibbutz near the Gaza border during Hamas’s Oct. 7 attack.
What it found: The report said Israeli forces weren’t prepared for the attack. The ensuing confusion meant that people in the kibbutz, where 101 people were killed, had to defend themselves for the first seven hours. [BBC News]
Reactions: Gallant said the forthcoming inquiry should examine state officials as well as the military. Residents called for more government action to help them recover and to rescue Hamas’s remaining hostages. [CNN]
In Gaza: The report comes as Israeli forces left parts of Gaza City last night, after a weeklong offensive meant to dismantle Hamas's capabilities. Gaza officials say the operation resulted in dozens of deaths. [Reuters]

3 QUESTIONS
...about summer reading
I wrote about books prior to covering national news for Yahoo and had the chance to recommend a few summer picks recently. Anthony asked me about my favorites.
Anthony: You listed a few different fictional books. Which ones are good for a relaxing beach day?
Lily: I definitely recommend Elise Bryant’s cozy mystery It’s Elementary as well as Steven Rowley’s book The Guncle and its recent sequel. They have deeper themes while still being incredibly fun.
Anthony: Of the nonfiction books you wrote about, is there one that taught you something surprising?
Lily: Emily Nussbaum’s book Cue the Sun! made me realize how many reality TV shows, including Big Brother and The Real Housewives, were directly influenced by The Real World. All roads lead to MTV.
Anthony: What would you recommend for someone who doesn’t have a lot of time to read?
Lily: I love picking up essay collections when I can only read a little bit at a time. Lilly Dancyger’s book First Love, which has so many beautiful essays on female friendship, is perfect for that.
