University of New Hampshire plans to eliminate journalism major
PROGRAM FOR FUTURE STUDENTS. YEAH, GUYS, WE SPOKE WITH ONE OF THE DEANS AT UNH. THEY’RE POINTING TO ISSUES LIKE DECLINING ENROLLMENT IN THAT PROGRAM, FINANCIAL CHALLENGES WITH IT, AND AN OVERALL CHANGING MEDIA LANDSCAPE THAT THEY’RE TRYING TO PREPARE STUDENTS FOR WITH THAT PROGRAM. NOW, THE FACULTY VOTED TO ELIMINATE THE CURRENT VERSION OF THE JOURNALISM MAJOR LAST WEEK. THOSE WHO ARE CURRENTLY ENROLLED IN IT WILL BE ALLOWED TO CONTINUE THEIR COURSES OF STUDY AND EARN THE DEGREE. THE SCHOOL WILL ALSO BE ACCEPTING STUDENTS INTO THAT JOURNALISM PROGRAM FOR THE UPCOMING SCHOOL YEAR, BUT UNH WILL NOW BE TRANSITIONING THAT MAJOR INTO A NEW INTERDISCIPLINARY PROGRAM FOR JOURNALISM AND DIGITAL COMMUNICATION. THE DEAN OF THE LIBERAL ARTS DEPARTMENT SAYS IT’S THEIR GOAL TO RESHAPE THAT MAJOR TO BETTER SUIT THE DEMANDS OF A RAPIDLY CHANGING MEDIA INDUSTRY. WE WANT TO, OF COURSE, CAPITALIZE AND KEEP THOSE ELEMENTS IN THE NEW MAJOR, BUT ALSO EMBRACE A MORE RECENT INNOVATION IN THE WORLD OF DIGITAL COMMUNICATION AND DIGITAL HUMANITIES. AND THE DEAN TELLS US IT IS THEIR GOAL TO HAVE THAT CURRICULUM READY FOR THE NEW VERSION OF THE MAJOR FOR THE 2025, 2026 SCHOOL YEAR.
