CARNEGIE FOUNDATION SELECTS USNA FOR INAUGURAL LEADERSHIP FOR PUBLIC PURPOSE CLASSIFICATION

POSTED ON: Friday, June 21, 2024 11:20 AM by mediarelations@usna.edu

The United States Naval Academy recently received the first Carnegie Leadership for Public Purpose Classification, one of only 25 U.S. colleges and universities to do so. This designation was awarded by the American Council on Education (ACE), the Doerr Institute for New Leaders at Rice University, and the Carnegie Foundation for the Advancement of Teaching.

“This recognition highlights USNA as an exemplar in higher education, focused on leadership for public purpose,” said VADM Yvette Davids, superintendent of the Naval Academy. “This signifies that within the broader scientific and practical field of leadership, USNA embodies a culture of leadership and leadership development within all mission elements. Achieving this was the culmination of over 12 months of work from a team composed of members by the Leadership Excellence Council. Congratulations and thank you to this team that dedicated their time and energy to this effort.”

“Congratulations to these pioneering recipients of the inaugural Carnegie Leadership for Public Purpose Classification,” said Timothy Knowles, president of the Carnegie Foundation for the Advancement of Teaching. “These institutions have demonstrated a relentless commitment to fostering leaders dedicated to the pursuit of vital public goods. Students from these institutions will undoubtedly shape a brighter future for us all, upholding fundamental American values and advancing opportunity for the nation.”

“Perhaps the single greatest benefit of completing this was the creation of a comprehensive document that shares USNA’s story of how we develop leaders to serve the Nation, which was achieved by a team of individuals representing all mission aspects of the Naval Academy.” said Dr. Celeste Raver, the Stockdale Center’s Timothy and Susanne Sullivan Director of Influencer Development. “The process helped us ask challenging questions regarding how we are achieving our mission of graduating leaders to serve the Nation and assessing the effectiveness of our approach.”
