In the TFP season 2 episode Crossfire, there's this scene where Megatron fights an Insecticon in an ambush set up by Airachnid, as arranged by an absent Starscream. Absent Starscream also invited all the Autobots, presumably in the hope of all of them killing each other so he could show up 3 hours late with starbucks and go 'ohh nooo what a shaaaame'.
Anyway, Megatron defeats the insecticon despite Airachnid disabling his weapons. But at the end he falls at Optimus Prime's feet and he looks up at Optimus from the floor like: "Oh... It would seem I'm unarmed and at your mercy. So tell me, Optimus... do you intend to take me alive or end this here and now?"
And to me, this is such a fun character moment for their relationship and for Megatron in particular. This is after all the s1 finale fallout with Orion Pax and the resurgence of all this tremendous history between the two characters, and Megatron has looked up, spotted Optimus, and found the exact way to make being at his mercy the worst possible experienceāfor Optimus.
He presents Optimus with two choices he doesn't want: kill him now or take him prisoner (with a third option (let him go?) entirely unvoiced and a whole bunch of options in between that go unmentionedābecause he is also just constructing the options he'll permit Optimus. From his knees. Never change, Megs). He's just taking the opportunity to ensure that whatever happens next is going to make both of them feel wretched, and it's going to be Optimus's fault. Because wasn't Optimus in charge here?
Anyway I love that Megatron is like... There's a small but not impossible chance that he might be about to die: Optimus has seemed resolved to kill him before, or any one of these other Autobots could lose patience with this gazillion year old war and blow his shiny head off without orders.
So he's like: I might be about to die, but I'm gonna die twisting the knife in Optimus's guts.
And I think that's beautiful. *wipes a tear*
