Netflix's new dating show is making history.
"The Boyfriend," Japan's first same-sex dating show, follows nine gay men as they search for love.
Filmed in Tateyama, Japan, the 10-episode series chronicles the cast's adventures spending a month living in a beach house and running a coffee truck.
Per Netflix, the series is a "blend of romance, camaraderie, jealousy, and everything in between." A trailer for "The Boyfriend" shows the men exploring their new bonds and reflecting on their sexuality.
"I wanted to tell my parents that it's men I'm interested in," Gensei, a 34-year-old hair and makeup artist from Taiwan, says at one point during the clip.
Friendships and romantic bonds form and one duo shares a kiss that host Yoshimi Tokui calls "one of the most memorable kissing scenes in human history."
Executive Producer Dai Ota described the concept of the show in a statement to Netflix.
“We started out wanting to highlight the young men’s friendships and personalities,” he said. “Our focus wasn’t just on romance but also on spending time together and experiencing personal growth.”
Chief Producer Keisuke Hishida also noted that the series chronicles the cast’s “shared friendships, youth, and struggles.”
