6 of fashion’s most influential Latinx & Hispanic designers

In honor of Latinx and Hispanic Heritage Month, we’re spotlighting six Latinx and Hispanic designers who have made a major impact on the fashion industry.

Oscar de la Renta

Born in the Dominican Republic, Oscar de la Renta started his eponymous label in New York in 1965 and quickly became a key figure in the fashion world. Known for his breathtaking gowns and ready-to-wear collections, his designs have been worn by everyone from Jacqueline Kennedy Onassis and Michelle Obama to Audrey Hepburn, Sarah Jessica Parker, and many more fashion icons. Oscar de la Renta passed away in 2014, and the label is now under the creative direction of Laura Kim and Fernando Garcia who continue the legacy of the beloved brand.


Carolina Herrera

Venezuelan-born Carolina Herrera showed her first collection in 1981, and since then she has continued to deliver elegant, feminine designs that are coveted by fashion lovers around the world. Her refined ready-to-wear and bridal collections offer timeless glamour, and have been worn by some of the biggest names in Hollywood. In 2018, Carolina Herrera appointed Wes Gordon to be the new creative director of the iconic fashion label.

Paco Rabanne

Born in Spain, Paco Rabanne launched his first collection in 1966. The haute couture and ready-to-wear designer’s innovative designs led him to become a force in the fashion industry. His chainmail mini dresses and bags have become iconic styles for the brand, and they have continued to be reimagined throughout the years to reach new generations of style seekers. Rabanne retired from the fashion house in 1999 and Julien Dossena has been the artistic director since 2013.  


Cristóbal Balenciaga

Spanish designer Cristóbal Balenciaga founded his fashion label in 1919 and after moving to Paris, he opened his fashion house there in 1937. His designs changed women’s fashion with the introduction of new silhouettes and innovative fits. And though Cristóbal Balenciaga retired in 1968, and passed away in 1972, his legacy lives on and the brand continues to have a loyal following under the artistic direction of Demna. 


Manolo Blahnik

Spanish footwear designer Manolo Blahnik has sketched every shoe in his collections since launching his namesake label in 1970. His elegant and timeless signature stilettos have led him to become a household name and receive numerous accolades. His iconic styles, like the Hangisi and Maysale, have become fan-favorites, appearing in films, television shows, and on red carpets around the world.

Gabriela Hearst

Gabriela Hearst was born in Uruguay and founded her eponymous label in 2015. Inspired by her childhood on a ranch in Uruguay and her life in New York, her collections focus on “honest luxury” and value sustainability. Her elevated and thoughtful designs incorporate beautiful fabrics and tailoring, and span ready-to-wear and accessories. In 2020, Gabriela Hearst furthered her influence in the fashion world when she was named creative director of the French fashion house Chloé.
