Tom Hanks Will Bring a Tear to Your Eye With These Sweet & Humble Quotes On Fatherhood

by

Tom Hanks is one of the nation’s most beloved stars, so it’s no surprise that he’s been hailed as America’s Dad in more recent decades. In addition to acting as a father figure for those across the country (in our heads, at least), the Forrest Gump icon is a dad in real life to four adult kids of his own.

While married to his first wife, Samantha Lewis, from 1977 to 1987, Hanks welcomed his firstborn: a son named Colin (b. 1977) who’s also a highly successful actor. A few years after Colin’s arrival, Hanks and Lewis brought their daughter Elizabeth (b. 1982) into the fold, and she maintains a special place in the League of Their Own star’s heart as his sole daughter.

In 1988, Hanks wed fellow actress Rita Wilson, and two years later in 1990, the couple welcomed their first son, Chet. The couple rounded out their family with their son Truman in 1995.

The quartet of Hanks kids, as well as Colin’s wife Samantha Bryant, supported their beloved dad at the 2020 Golden Globes as he accepted the Cecil B. DeMille award, and he turned the honor right back around on them. In his speech, he said, “A man is blessed with a family sitting down front like that. A wife who is fantastic in every way, who has taught me what love is. Five kids who are braver, stronger, and wiser than their old man is, a loving group of people who have put [up] with me being away for months and months and months at a time. … I can’t tell you how much your love means to me,” he emotionally addressed them.
