The bushido code of ethics

The Way of the Warrior.

Bushidō is the moral code my dad embodied in his thoughts, actions and beliefs. This code also wove its way into his comics, and provides a lens to understand the guiding principles of the Japanese American experience. The moral code of the samurai includes honesty, integrity and persistence—values that continue in Japan and influence the newest generation of Japanese Americans today.

Sam I am.

Sam Goto created the character Samurai Shigeru as part of the comic strip Seattle Tomodachi (friend of Seattle) which told the stories of the first Japanese immigrants and their offspring settling in the Pacific Northwest. Sam’s comics and illustrations carry not only stories of Japanese culture and tradition, but also integrate Sam’s own experiences balancing his heritage values of loyalty, honor and honesty—akin to a samurai’s code—while pursuing the American dream.

Kelly Goto,
Daughter & Author

〝In praise of Samurai Sam - The beauty of Sam Goto’s art is that it provides observations on life to those of us who may not like to read books. He tells his stories using comic book characters living their Japanese American lives. They make us laugh, they make us cry, and in the end Sam makes us believe that everything will work out fine. If samurai are warriors, then Samurai Sam is a gentle one.〞

Lori Matsukawa (Journalist & Children's Book Author)

〝Seattle Samurai by Kelly Goto is a captivating journey through the rich, illustrated cartoon storytelling of her father, Sam Goto. This visual masterpiece vividly captures the Japanese American experience, blending history, art, and culture in a way that will leave readers both enlightened, uplifted, and inspired.〞
