Elden Ring’s Margit the Fell Omen boss fight is classic FromSoftware: super difficult and totally beatable. We spent a long time figuring out a strategy for defeating Margit, and in this Elden Ring Margit the Fell Omen guide, we’ll show you how to defeat the boss, starting with preparing, as well as recommending weapons and a shield.

Best equipment for Margit the Fell Omen

Margit’s placement near the beginning of Elden Ring limits your options since there are only so many weapons and armors available to you. So let’s talk about what’s best for the boss, given its early game availability.

Where to find the Beast Crest Heater Shield

The Beast Crest Heater Shield is the best early game shield because it negates Physical damage. In the gallery below, you can see the map location of the Beast Crest Heater Shield.

The Damage Negation > Physical stat means that, when something swings a weapon at you, you won’t take Physical damage when you block it with the shield. It’s a little more complicated than that, but not much. If you’ve got enough stamina and poise to absorb a physical blow, you won’t take any HP damage from it.

Think of it this way: If an attack from a sword caused 1,000 physical damage, and you blocked it successfully with the Beast Crest Heater Shield, then you take no HP damage. However, if you used a shield with, say, 50 Physical damage negation, you’d take 500 Physical damage. (Yes, it’s more complicated than this, because you have to factor in your armor and other defenses, but the principle stands: Physical 100.0 means no damage under ideal circumstances.)

Given that Margit’s incredibly powerful attacks can obliterate half or more of your health in one hit, having a shield that absorbs the damage is ideal.

It’s not a panacea. You may be rocked, watching an animation of your shield flying over your head. Your stamina may be drained after. You may have to run away for safety. But you saved yourself the huge HP hit.

Margit the Fell Omen tips and how to beat

Refill your health at 50%

As a general rule, if your HP is at about 50%, take a drink from your Flask of Crimson Tears. Assume that every direct hit you take from Margit removes half of your health. Don’t skimp. Don’t equivocate. Heal. You get no bonus points for dying with unused health drinks.

Assume that you’re always going to take a hit that you shouldn’t, and if that hit is likely to kill you at around 50% health, then make sure to have more than that at all times.

Distract Margit

It’s nice to have someone else attacking and doing damage, but the primary purpose of having someone or something else in the fight is that they distract Margit. When Margit is attacking someone else, he’s not attacking you. And that gives you opportunities to attack.

  • Summon Sorcerer Rogier near the entrance to the fight.
  • Use the Spirit Jellyfish Ashes to distract Margit and build up poison. If you don’t have those, go to the Stormhill Shack, and speak to the woman sitting there. After a few dialogue prompts, she’ll give you this gift. You equip it in your pouch, just like your flasks.

The way this plays out is simple and repeatable. Summon Rogier. Walk through the mist and into the boss fight. Immediately use the Spirit Jellyfish Ashes. Now Margit has three enemies to contend with.

Exploit Super Armor

You won’t see this stat anywhere because it’s working in the background. Super Armor is like an invisible meter that builds up when you hit an enemy. When that (invisible) meter fills, your enemy falls to their knees, and you have the opportunity to attack and even backstab.

Holding a weapon with two hands causes more damage (or buildup) to the Super Armor meter. It’s risky, though, because that means you won’t be holding a shield. The reward is a stunned Margit and an immense amount of damage that you can cause.

Exploit Blood loss buildup

Certain weapons cause blood loss buildup, like the Reduvia shown above. Every time you hit an enemy with this weapon, an invisible meter fills. When it’s full, blood loss occurs, and your enemy loses a significant chunk of health. Think of it like a free backstab.

The downside here is that every individual hit from this dagger takes off only a small chunk of health, but the blood loss damage makes up for it.

Bosses like Margit have tons of HP, and a weapon that occasionally obliterates huge chunks of their health is helpful.

You may already have a weapon that causes blood loos buildup. If you don’t, you can defeat Bloody Finger Hunter Yura at the map location shown above, and he’ll drop it. Fighting him is also a great way to learn about how blood loss works, because it’ll happen to you.

Attack from safety

While your allies are distracting Margit, attack from behind. That’s the safest place to be. It’s also a great place to observe and learn Margit’s attacks.
