More images of Rockstar's long-lost Agent surface online

But the project is still missing in action.

Owen S. Good is a longtime veteran of video games writing, well known for his coverage of sports and racing games.

It's been about a year since anyone heard something new about Agent, the spy-movie adventure Rockstar announced way back in 2009, so that means it's time for some old environmental assets to surface and restart speculation on whether Rockstar Games is even working on this project any more.

The images themselves are at least five years old, coming from an artist who worked on Agent in 2009 and 2010. The last anyone really heard of Agent was in 2011 when a similar batch of interior artwork was pulled from an artist's online resume. They don't show any characters, but recertify the game's Mediterranean setting. Agent was going to be set in the cold-war 1970s, also.

Agent was originally planned as a PlayStation 3 exclusive. The ship on that has definitely sailed, and though Rockstar's trademark is still active and Take-Two has never said the project was scrapped (because publishers rarely do such things) it's hard to imagine this is an ongoing concern.

Red Dead Redemption launched in 2010 and was a huge success, and if fans are clamoring for anything other than Grand Theft Auto from Rockstar, it would be the open-world cowboy game (or even some backward compatible release of it). Rockstar made clear six years ago that Agent would be different from Grand Theft Auto, and Take-Two hasn't done a console exclusive of this scale since the PlayStation 2 days. It would make more sense that the next thing coming is a known quantity like Red Dead Redemption, more than a new venture on a single platform.
