FAQ

What is the difference between BioVinyl and conventional virgin vinyl?

In BioVinyl, the petroleum in the S-PVC and in the copolymer is replaced by recycled used cooking oil.

What are the advantages of BioVinyl?

BioVinyl is made from bio-based PVC (ISCC mass balance approach). This manufacturing process reduces CO2 emissions by 90% for the PVC component. The use of finite petroleum is avoided.

How are vinyl records made from BioVinyl?

The pressing process is identical to that for conventional vinyl records. All the equipment and processes are exactly the same.

Can I store my BioVinyl vinyl record as normal or will it degrade over time?

No, it does not decompose. BioVinyl is also PVC from a chemical point of view. The vinyl record has the same life expectancy and properties as a LP made from fossil PVC – i.e. conventional virgin vinyl.

Is BioVinyl sensitive to light?

No.

Is a vinyl record made from BioVinyl compostable?

No. Chemically speaking, it consists of PVC and can, if necessary, be recycled together with other PVC products. It is therefore 100% available for recycling.

Does the biomass used to produce BioVinyl compete with that used for food production?

No. It was important to us that BioVinyl does not compete with food production. We only use biomass from recycling processes and nothing is grown specifically for BioVinyl.

Can I hear a difference to a vinyl record made from virgin vinyl?

No, the material is chemically identical to fossil PVC.

Does BioVinyl cost more than conventional virgin vinyl?

The price of BioVinyl is slightly higher because the production of bio-based PVC is more expensive.

Can BioVinyl also be used for effect vinyl records?

Yes, all available BioVinyl colours can be pressed as effect vinyl records.

Does the vinyl record smell of frying fat?

No, the used cooking oil is not directly in the vinyl record. It is merely the starting material for the extraction of ethylene, which is then used as a raw material in the vinyl record.

Who guarantees that BioVinyl is an independent, externally tested material and not "greenwashing"?

The PVC used for BioVinyl production is subject to international ISCC PLUS certification, is therefore controlled throughout the entire upstream supply chain and is subject to the ISCC mass balance approach. Only BioVinyl with ISCC PLUS certification provides reliable protection against deception in vinyl record production.
