Area Description:

Inshore waters between Cape Kidnappers and Portland Island.

Situation:

A weakening front moves across the upper North Island today, then a ridge of high pressure spreads over most of New Zealand. The ridge weakens tomorrow as a front moves onto the western South Island. A low develops on the front and should move east over the North Island on Thursday and Friday. Meanwhile, a new ridge of high pressure builds over the South Island on Friday.

Tuesday: Variable 5 knots. Northeast 10 knots developing for a time in the afternoon and evening. Sea slight. Fine. Southerly swell 1.5 metres, easing to 1 metre.

Outlook until midnight Friday: Wednesday: Variable 5 knots, becoming northerly 10 knots in the afternoon. Fine. Southerly swell 1 metre easing to half a metre. Thursday: Northerly 10 knots. Partly cloudy, occasional rain developing later. Easterly swell half a metre. Friday: Northeast 15 knots, changing southwest 25 knots early. Rain, easing to a few showers. Easterly swell half a metre. Southerly swell 2 metres developing in the east.

Outlook following 3 days: Wednesday: Northeast 10 knots, rising to northerly 20 knots south of Mahia Peninsula in the evening. Thursday: Becoming northerly 20 knots everywhere in the morning. Friday: Northerly 25 knots, changing southwest 25 knots but 35 knots south of Mahia Peninsula later. Sea becoming very rough in the west. Moderate southerly swell developing.
