    Wow!

    Wow!
I recently read an article which claimed that the Apple Thunderbolt 4 cable is superior to the aftermarket ones. After migrating my M1 Mac Mini to my new M2 Pro Mac Mini, using an Anker “USB 4” thunderbolt cable (that claims to deliver 40gbps), and getting an average transfer speed of 56MB/s (Shy of the advertised transfer rate, by well over 39gbps) I decided to buy the Apple Thunderbolt 4 cable to migrate my 2020 MacBook Air Intel to my new MacBook 15 M2. While also curiously shy of the advertised transfer rate (by over 39Gbps), it is worth noting that my average transfer rate was between 300MB/s and 600MB/s. (Almost 10 times faster than the Anker cable)While the Mac Mini migration took “overnight” to transfer approximately 2TB of data, the MacBook Air migration took about an hour to transfer the same amount of data (approximately 2TB of data). Now, is Apple deliberately favoring their own cables? It wouldn’t surprise me, but whether or not that is true, clearly the Apple Thunderbolt cable is the one to buy, to ensure the fastest transfer rates. (Just don’t expect to get anywhere close to the speeds that are advertised!)

The simple fact is this, the cable is extremely well engineered and appears solidly built. I bought it to use when I needed to drive a monitor from my Lenovo T15G at 4K. I used a cheap USB C to HDMI dongle for the task. The only issue I had was that it just worked with zero issues or problems. I also connected a USB C M.2 drive thru the cable as well and again it simply worked and transferred data at the 10Gbps limit of the interface chip of the adapter. This from a 3M cable! I must admit that the cost felt like rough prison sex but I seriously doubt that any cable at half the price would be as nice and perform nearly as well at its rated 40Gb/sec. I saw a detailed review of the cables internal construction with 3D Xray images, compared to the junk from you know where there is simply no comparison.

There are very few options available on the market if you need a long Thunderbolt 4 cable, and due to the high speeds and sensitive timings required for Thunderbolt 4, this requires quite a bit of engineering effort and active electronics in the cable to make one that works reliably. For those interested, this cable has an ARM Cortex-M0 CPU embedded into each end of the cable!

For quality, this is one of the sturdiest USB-related cables I've ever used. Very thick and strong housing, heavy, and braided. I should hope that this cable will last a very long time.

Electrically, this cable can do pretty much all the things which USB-C ports are standardized to do: Thunderbolt 3, Thunderbolt 4, USB 3.x, USB 4, DisplayPort, Power Delivery up to 100 watts, etc. If you need to plug two USB-C devices together, whatever it is is probably going to work with this cable. This is basically the "hopeful future" of USB where one cable and port can do everything, though we're clearly not there yet if said cable has to be $159.

Which brings me to the only drawback of this cable: The price. I'm by no means an Apple fanboy; I don't own any Apple computers or phones. This is just a good cable that works with anything. The price *is* pretty high on this cable in typical Apple fashion, but it isn't outrageously so. There are a lot of active electronics in the cable and lots of shielding, so it would be a fairly expensive cable to produce. But personally I'd say the 3 meter cable is worth *maybe* $100. The $159 sticker price is really high and I'd wait for a sale. Currently December of 2022 it is on sale for $129 which is how much I spent, and that's still pushing it.

Additionally, if all you need is to charge your laptop, or do normal USB file transfers, then this cable is way overkill for what you need. Save some money and buy a cheaper cable. However, if you want to be able to carry just a single cable in your travel bag that can do all the things, and you're willing to spend for a high quality cable, then this could be a good option. If you want to save just a little bit of money, Cable Matters also makes a 3 meter Thunderbolt 4 cable for $70, but that's about the *cheapest* I've seen for an active cable.

My use case for this cable is to maintain the speed of my external HDD enclosure 8 feet away from my Mac Studio. And it works flawlessly. I have tried MANY other cables and they often just don't work or if they do the speed drops to almost nothing. If you need a longer cable than what your external enclosure ships with than this cable will most likely work. I am only using this for a USB connection but I have also tested it for charging a MAC Pro, using on Thunderbolt 3 and 4 ports, on USB C ports and works fine (at least on Apple products). Very very happy with it (but my wallet hurts). I am also testing some of the other 6 foot active cables and will see how those work (you don't always need a 9 foot cable).

I'll admit, it seems crazy to spend this much on a cable, but there is a big difference between these cables and generic cables. If you are curious, some videos show the insides of Apple's TB4 cables vs the lack of processing and power management in generic cables. Troubles with my Studio monitor and PC cleared up after using this cable.

When you don’t know if a device is performing at its peak you’ll need something as reference for testing, especially true in external storage. The cable is by far the most expensive but you know you’re running the attached device at its best.

I had another USB-4 Cable from various NVMe enclosures and the Apple cable still managed to squeeze some more performance. I’d say if the speed test says it is running at 4GB/S using this cable, it probably is.
