Common Questions & Answers
Deciding where to place your FeatherSnap Bird Feeder is an important choice - you want to make sure it’s not only somewhere you can easily see it and access it for cleaning and refilling, but you also want to make sure it’s in a great place for the safety and accessibility of our avian friends. Make sure it’s in a moderately open area, ideally about 10 feet away from trees or shrubs. This makes it safer from predators like outdoor cats, and harder for pest species like squirrels to get to, while giving our feathered pals some cover close by incase, they’re feeling insecure, or need to rest after having a meal. Another thing to consider is the distance from windows - collisions into reflective glass are a big problem for little birds. If placing your feeder near a window, place it within 3 feet. This allows for easy viewing, as well as decreases the chance of injury to a bird from a window strike, since they won’t be able to get up to full speed.
You’ve found the perfect spot for your FeatherSnap bird feeder, filled it with seed, and attracted a lively audience of feathered friends. However, your job doesn’t end there. Regular maintenance of your feeder is essential to ensure the health and well-being of both the birds and the feeder itself. We recommend cleaning your feeder at least 1 to 2 times a month, more frequently if you live in a warm, humid climate, or after a rain. But why is this necessary? Seed can get moldy or spoil over time, potentially causing illnesses in our fine feathered friends. Additionally, we need to take steps to stop the spread of diseases that birds can carry, making it even more important to regularly clean feeders. To clean your feeder, empty any remaining birdseed into the garbage and make sure that you remove the camera! Wash the feeder thoroughly in warm, soapy water, or use a 10% bleach solution (1 part bleach to 9 parts water). A bottle brush can be handy for reaching into the seed compartments without fully disassembling the feeder. Rinse the feeder well and let it dry completely before refilling with fresh seed, replacing the camera, and hanging it back up. This simple maintenance routine ensures a safe and inviting haven for our feathered friends.
Our app and Live View are free for FeatherSnap feeder owners. The Wi-Fi subscription adds ability to view camera content.
Now that your FeatherSnap bird feeder is filled with fresh seeds and placed in your yard, you may be eagerly awaiting the arrival of our feathered friends. However, it’s not uncommon to find yourself waiting for a while. Patience is key here, as it can take between 4 to 6 weeks for birds to discover a new food source, even one as inviting as the FeatherSnap bird feeder. Our feeder’s thoughtful design features separate food chambers, allowing you to offer a variety of seed types or mixes, which can attract a broader range of bird species. Maintaining a clean feeder is also crucial to prevent mold and spoilage (check out our how-to article for more information). If it’s been more than 6 weeks without any bird visitors, consider reevaluating the placement of your feeder. Ensure it’s situated close enough to natural cover like trees or shrubs so that our avian pals can feel secure. Moving the feeder to a different location in your yard might just be the change needed to entice your feathered friends.
In some circumstances, your feeder may not be getting adequate sunlight to charge the device. If your solar panel does not seem to be charging your feeder, you have the option to charge the camera module by using a USB-C cable (included in the box). Simply remove the camera from the feeder and fully charge it before reconnecting it to your feeder.
