    Product Description

    Product Description

The latest version of the SuperOne provides the same terrific sonics of the Super Zero with enough bass response such that a subwoofer becomes optional. The SuperOne 2.1 is very compact, measuring at just 11.6" tall x 7.25" wide x 8.5" deep. However, unlike most small speakers, which use a port, the Super One 2.1's acoustic suspension (i.e. sealed) enclosure focuses on making beautiful, lifelike midrange and high frequencies with surprisingly musical bass from its 6.5” long throw pulp cone woofer and 1” silk dome tweeter. An addition of a 2nd/3rd order crossover effectively blocks extra bass that tries to interfere with the tweeter. The compact, well-braced cabinet is purposely designed to be strong and stout in order to avoid unwanted box vibrations. As such, the NHT SuperOne 2.1 is a true-high end book shelf monitor that builds on the merits of its predecessor and can be the perfect pick for the audiophile on a budget.

The new NHT SuperOne 2.1 is a true high-end book shelf monitor that builds on the merits of it's predecessor and improves upon them. At just 11.6" tall x 7.25" wide x 8.5" deep, the SuperOne 2.1 is very compact. However, unlike most small speakers, which try to fool you with boomy, pseudo-bass from a port, the Super One 2.1's acoustic suspension sealed enclosure focuses on making beautiful, lifelike midrange and high frequencies with surprisingly musical bass. High gloss black finish. The act of polishing the edges naturally melts the vinyl together which helps minimize the seams.

    Classic speaker and excellent value!
My wife wanted a stereo for our small den. To my surprise she enjoys good sound as much as I do. A Musical Paradise tube amp perfectly suits the NHT Super One. Typically a seven watt tube amp would not be used with the NHT but in a small room (10 x 14) the sound is rich and full. Beautiful combination that sounds very three dimensional without fatigue. I can listen for hours with these classic speakers. Flip a switch and I’m watching movies with crystal clear voices and effects. I feel I got a lot of value for what I paid. Thanks!

I’ve owned a pair of SuperZeros for some time now and wanted a fuller range replacement so I don’t have to lean on my subwoofers so much. What I like about the Zeros is also true if the Ones - good, spacious, stable imaging with a relaxed presentation and accurate reproduction. No sizzle here. No exaggerated highs, forward mids or boomy bass. In the case of the Zeros, there is no bass, really, but they are actually listenable without for classical, traditional jazz and unplugged music. The SuperOnes bring bass to the table - enough so that all genres save maybe hip-hop, electronic and modern jazz don’t need subwoofer reinforcement. In a smaller room, they don’t need a sub at all. As in the Zeros, the presentation is relaxed and “warm” without the “zing” newer loudspeaker designs seem to add. I compared them to Elac Debut 5.2s and the SVS Ultra bookshelves. I disliked the Elacs - too bright and edgy. The SVS was very interesting, but ultimately too powerful and forward-sounding for my space. They had great dynamics and bass, but the image was ruined by the forward “hard” (though not harsh) midrange. Like a larger TV, they made me want to move back to a space in my room that didn’t exist. Also, the image, though laser-sharp laterally, was decidedly flat front to back. It’s a pretty unforgiving speaker that doesn’t do orchestral or acoustic music well at all.

That is where the NHTs really shine - they project a wide, deep and stable image with warmth. No, lateral imaging is nowhere near as pinpoint as the SVS and possibly the Elacs (I didn’t keep them long enough to listen for that), but there has to be a compromise and that is it. The Ones are not overpowering. They just do what they are supposed to do and do it well. They are very listenable and non-fatiguing. They really do seem to disappear more than any speaker in this price range can hope to. These speakers are just amazing for the price asked. They really grow on you. Don’t get me wrong - if I had a bigger place, I might have kept the Ultras for their wild dynamics and power. But let’s not forget that they are 5 times the cost and twice the size of these puppies and much harder to accommodate in a smaller space.

I’m done shopping speakers for now. I’ll consider the new $2000 Buchardt S400s a little later. I’m curious about the KEF LS50s, but not enough to pay $1500 for them and still have to use my subs. The Buchardts will at least let me sell the subwoofers and move on.

So, these really good and really inexpensive SuperOnes will be sticking around. They are part of the family now.

In case anyone needs to know, I’m driving them with a Yamaha N803 receiver. It’s another remarkable, relatively affordable piece. It replaced a dead R-115 Luxman receiver and is doing a yeoman’s job of it. This amp section drove those SVS Ultras hard with plenty of headroom. Speaking of which, although these Ones are not terribly hard to drive, the better your amp is, the better your results will be. They can’t take unlimited power, but they can take 200 clean watts with no problem. They don’t play as loud or clean as the Ultras will, they will sound better in the attempt. They are lovable. That’s what NHTs are - lovable.

Preferences in audio are highly subjective, as we all know, but if you are looking for a smooth, balanced, natural sounding, compact bookshelf speaker, the SuperOne 2.1 may be hard to beat. I have them in my home office, which is 120 sf, in a desktop application, where I am very limited on speaker placement options. I can't have them out in the room, 3 feet from any wall, on heavy stands, as some higher end speakers seem to require. I wasn't immediately blown away by them, but after some break-in time I quickly came to appreciate the sealed-cabinet design and paper cone drivers because they're easy to place, easy to drive, and easy to listen to, with an "old-school" naturalness that's very pleasing to the (my) ear.
I run them through a Cambridge Audio CXA61 (60 watt solid-state amp and DAC), with a pair of Elac 1010 subwoofers located just off the floor below them, about 5 feet apart, toed in, tweeters at ear level, for nearfield listening. The whole system balances very well, and bass extension on the SuperOnes, with its 6-1/2" driver, is deep enough to create a seamless integration with the subs. Some smaller speakers I've tried, including the SuperZeroes (which I love otherwise) are harder to balance because the bass falls off earlier, which means there's either a gap in the frequency range or the crossover to the subs has to be raised so they provide something closer to mid-bass, which creates a more discernible perception of multiple sound sources unless the main speakers and subs are right over each other.
One thing I like about the SuperOnes is that they are non-fatiguing for all-day use. If there's one thing I miss with them it's maybe a little high-frequency sparkle and clarity, but I've found that this is often difficult to achieve in an otherwise warm, non-fatiguing speaker. In fact, I have found the SuperOnes to possess the best, fullest overall sound of the following bookshelf speakers that I own or have home-demoed:
NHT SuperZero (really impressive with voices/midrange/imaging, but lacking a bit of heft)
NHT C3 (not my cup of tea, with aluminum tweeters and harsher overall sound)
Klipsch RP-500M (very immediate and dynamic, but less natural and ultimately more fatiguing for long-term listening)
Proac Tablette 10 (beautifully finished, as they should be at $1900, with good upper clarity, but thinner overall sound, with less bass extension)
KEF LS50 META (very good all-rounder, with lots of features at $1600, but ultimately just not quite as "friendly" to listen to, if that makes any sense. I prefer the slight warmth of the SuperOnes.)
I wish I could find a pair of bookshelf speakers I liked better than the SuperOne 2.1s for my situation, and my ear, as there are certainly more beautiful speakers out there, but I've yet to find it. I'm sure a Harbeth C7 might surpass it, for example, but I don't have the space for it. The smaller ATC SCM11 might as well, which I could accommodate, but I don't want a speaker that's fussy about setup and source. The SuperOne almost always sounds right to me.

I have decided to write a review after a few years of ownership of these gems.

Firstly they were well packaged with foam end blocks and a fabric bag to protect them. Secondly the customer service is fantastic. I had a question about whether or not to remove the grills and they responded fairly quickly letting me know that they voice them without the grills.
Now how do they sound? In a word wonderful. Running a Rega Brio on them allows them to show their talents. Voices sound natural. Brasses have a proper bite to them. Drums sound snappy while retaining a decent amount of body and impact. Highs are decently smooth and detailed while retaining a natural airyness.

The level of performance from these speakers rivals many I've heard around $1k. That being said the NHT aren't as good at imaging as some of those more expensive speakers speakers.

I can recommend these to anyone who loves good sound but is on a budget. Some amps that should pair well would be the NAD C316BEE and the Rega IO.

In conclusion these are fantastic speakers and not just for the money.

I was in the market for acoustic sealed speakers & these were a perfect choice. Most bookshelf speakers are bass reflex, which are finicky in their placement. I use these speaker in the basement, so there isn't a wall to place them close to for a bass reflex design. These NHTs replaced a pair of Totem Mites that I had from 2005 to 2017. With the Totem speakers, some of the songs on CD or recorded onto tape from CD would sound fluttery, due the the low bass frequencies in the song. The NHT Superone 2.1s don't have a problem like this. The sound from the Superones is great. Clean, natural highs, clear mid-range & well defined, not boomy, bass. I have been using these NHTs for 2 years now & have had no issues with them. They offer great sound & I highly recommend them.

I bought this as a center speaker replacement for my entry level HTIB. I decided to get five in total to complete my 5.1 system. Clear, buttery-smooth voices and mids, extremely clear dialogue at low volumes. Highs are clear and not overly sharp at all. Hard to say about the bass, because it blends so well with my SVS sub at the 80hz crossover that I can't tell where one ends and the other begins. And of course that's what you want. In terms of bang-for-buck, NHT is one of the best brands you can buy in Canada for speakers.

Reviewed in Canada on May 6, 2020

As others have noted, these have a break-in period. When you first use them, they sound very muffled, but improve over time.
The finish is piano black gloss and is very shiny - its hard to see this properly in the pictures here. Its closer to a computer screen in finish than it is to normal speakers that are black wood grain. Make sure that is what you want since it shows dust and fingerprints, but looks great otherwise. The grill looks nice with these speakers as well.

Also as noted, there is no bass reflex port, so these are not your typical boomy speakers distorting mid-range tones to sound like something they aren't. Be sure to balance with other speakers in your setup if you want more low range.

Wow. Quality of construction is great
Sealed speaker so easy to setup at any position (i use them on a PC setup)
The sound quality is awesome ( i own paradigm speakers, micca, monitor audio etc)

For the price they seem very hard to beat

Actually ended up removing a dedicated center because the sound quality of those was better at reproducing the center image than the actual center. And it is a Monitor Audio.
