There was a problem filtering reviews right now. Please try again later.
In particular, the design, materials, and construction are all ace. The metal double-walled carafe feels solid, and has been put to test with the occasional accidental knock in the kitchen sink; no dents or scuffing of the black finish! Parts that are plastic feel quality and not cheap or flimsy. The dial and digital read-out look smart. All in all, it's a quality pot. And it should be for the price! ($249 at time of review).
On the topic of price, this is spendy, but it's not out of scale for higher-end SCAA certified coffee makers. Most machines in this price bracket range from mid-$100 to mid-$200. So, while this is at the higher end of its competitors, I have seen it go on sale often enough to make it a contender. I'm thinking that many of the 3-star reviews are Mr. Coffee users and probably don't spend nearly $20 dollars a bag on coffee, either.
Personally, while the dials/settings weren't intuitive, it was easy enough after several uses. And I can forgive the steep learning curve because it really does make some great coffee. I measured the brew basket temps at 203 degrees Fahrenheit, which is within spec (198-204 degrees) for Specialty Coffee Association of America (SCAA) certification. Its unclear if this particular Zwilling model is SCAA certified, but it met the specs when I measured them. I also measured the temps inside the vaccum carafe after a couple of hours. It was still 146 degrees- none of that sitting on a hot plate stale, burnt, bitter coffee flavor!
Overall, we are really happy with the maker and if you are looking for a higher-end drip machine, I would encourage you to consider this as well as some of the other great options in that price range.
The last thing I'd note is that this uses conical filters, not the traditional basket types. Happy brewing!
PLUSES:
The entire coffee maker is controlled with one dial. One dial sets the number of cups, clock, timer, water hardness, on and off, everything. That's a nice feature. It makes the unit look streamlined and clean.
It's easy to clean. The filter holder comes out completely and along with the carafe and lid the unit should be easy to keep clean. The water tank is clear and although it doesn't unlatch from the base for cleaning, it's large enough to rinse it with soapy water if necessary.
It takes an easy-to-locate filter size. I was able to procure a couple reusable Number 4 filters for the machine so I don't spend spare time chasing down paper filters.
It brews stronger coffee than the percolator or drip coffee makers I've used. Now, this may be because the "cup size" on the side of the coffee maker equals 4 ounces per "cup" instead of the usual 6 ounces. The instruction book recommends 2 Tbsp ground coffee per cup, which would make the spoon stand up by itself in the mug. Using 1 Tbsp per cup, which is normal for drip coffee makers, makes a strong cup of coffee.
It uses a 24 hour timer, which eliminates the issue of "did I remember to select AM for tomorrow's coffee?" If you set it to 7:00, your coffee will be ready in the morning. Period. That's a nice feature.
MINUSES:
It doesn't make as much coffee as I thought it would. The container makes 10 "cups" of coffee, but those cups equal 4 oz instead of 6 oz. So a total of 40 oz/6 = less than 7 cups of coffee. Considering the coffee drinkers in our house use 14 oz mugs each morning to get moving, that's 3 mugs of hot coffee plus a little more if I fill the entire container. So really it doesn't hold any more than my 8 cup stovetop percolator, which is disappointing. I was hoping that this would make enough for light entertaining without having to stand over the stove.
The coffee maker empties the reservoir of water regardless of the number of cups you select on the dial. If I select 4 cups but absentmindedly fill the water to the 10 cup mark I'm going to get some really watered down coffee. This seems to be an odd omission from a company that specializes in German engineering.
The coffee maker shipped with 0 filters. It sat on my counter for nearly a week until I located a No. 4 filter set to use with it. At this price point I would expect at least 10 filters to be included.
The unit shuts down when it reaches its "descale me" point and will not work until you run it through its cleaning function. This will be annoying if I forget to purchase the descaler (also not included) in time. Setting the water hardness level to 1 rather than the default 2 will give me extra cycles, but I have no idea how many.
This coffee maker is really expensive. I have purchased other Zwilling products in the past, and they have been worth their high price. 20 years later the knives are still sharp and still get used every single day. I expect this coffee maker to be a workhorse as well since it carries the Zwilling name, but the price point is daunting for a drip coffee maker -- unless this is actually supposed to be a drip *espresso* maker, which would explain 2 Tb coffee per 4 oz cup.
OVERALL
Overall this is a really nice coffee maker. I'll be scaling the amount of coffee back to match the cup size, to 2 tsp per cup instead of 3 tsp (1 Tbsp). I like it, but it would have been nice if it adhered to conventional measurements so that I didn't have to relearn a system that works everywhere else in the US coffee world.
Some have complained about the dial and water in the reservoir being redundant. They aren't. The dial is for blooming, which is kind of "pregaming" to prep the grounds for how much water is going to flow through.
1 - The clock is not an always on display - you have to hit the button to display it. I like that the other display icons disappear when not in use, but not the clock. That being said, you won't want to display it when you realize it's set to military time and can't be changed. That is beyond stupid.
2 - The water reservoir doesn't come off. The instructions will, on multiple occasions, instruct you to clean the removable water reservoir with soapy water while simultaneously warning you not to get the machine anywhere near a faucet or a sink.
3- Says it's filterless while conveniently forgetting to tell you that the reusable filter component is sold separately and not sold at all on Amazon. Also the filter piece does not come in black and therefore does not match the color of this machine.
I know a perfect coffee maker does not exist, but I seek out items at this price point because I expect to not experience so many repeated inconveniences. This expectations have been violated.

2. The blooming function is now NOT available on my machine. I am guessing that the function is now on by default. The machine makes excellent tasting coffee with dark or medium roasts that I now tried.
3. As for the dial for the number of cups, I just dial it to the amount of water I use.

Shows great on countertop. If you also need a grinder, I recommend getting matching Zwilling grinder.
No issues with carafe leaks.

This is why I wanted and intelligent answer from Zwilling. Do NOT hold your breath for that. I have spoken to multiple people and nobody knows how it works. My question was "escalated" but never get a response. I tried emailing the question to Zwilling. Again escalated. I bugged them and finally got a response stating " you are not forced to select cups. See page 11". My reply was "Yes you are. Try reading page 12" and highlighted the passage stating to select the cups. LOL
Warning. When the machine decides it is time to descale., you are locked out of selecting cups of coffee and it will run descaling program. Manual says it gives a warning to descale and if ignored, after a couple of times you are forced to run deacale. If there is a warning, I have never noticed it. A smart company would have made the warning light red.
Summary. I do like the coffee flavour, but because the stupidity with Zwilling Customer Service, I will only give it a 1 star. The programming is not logical and it seems nobody has the intelligence to provide an answer.
