Overrated, very lightweight and weak sound

Overrated, very lightweight and weak sound
I was impressed by the New York Times' "Wirecutter" feature on "best ukuleles for beginners" article from late July 2023. This Kala model was not reviewed in detail, but Wirecutter said it would be their next "best uke" recommendation, as the "best uke" they featured (an Alvarez model) is no longer available, for whatever reason.I am not actually a beginner, but I'm no pro, either. I have played the uke for decades, and own 3. I do not have a concert model, so I was hopeful that a recommendation for ukes mostly under $100 would be a straight shot to the highest possible quality "budget priced" instrument, amid the zillions of cheap ukes available. My first reaction on pulling the uke out of the box was that it is SO light. Lighter than my smaller 1926 Martin Soprano. Like it's made of Balsa wood. I tuned it up, and although chords fingered well, the sound was week and gutless.I remembered that Kala's website featured prominently that their base of operation is Petaluma, CA. I used to live near there. I thought the website said their instruments are made there. So imagine my chagrin when I found the featured "Made in China" sticker on the back of the head. That made sense, given the cheap feel of the instrument, but I went back to the Kala website and found that they did not say ALL their instruments are made in Petaluma, only their "Elite" line, priced over $1K, are made there, apparently. This little lightweight axe has some good reviews, so maybe I am the odd man out. But I am returning this made in China disappointment to Amazon.

I keep seeing comments that this is a fantastic beginner uke. That is rubbish. This is a fantastic ukulele regardless of skill level. What do you want before it is no longer a beginners instrument? It has a rosewood fretboard, nickel frets, geared tuners, great action, great sound, comes with quality strings. So what's left? I understand that it doesn't have a solid wood body but that isn't necessarily a bad thing. There are people like me that don't want to concern themselves with whether or not the humidity in the corner of the bedroom is going to warp the body of our favorite ukulele. I don't have to worry so much about humidity with this ukulele.

I have three ukuleles now. One is an Oscar Schmidt OU3 concert and the other is a mango Fluke. The fluke is much deeper and louder. This Kala ukulele manages to remain delicate and still project it's sound well. It's hard to tell you what I appreciate about this ukulele without bringing emotion into it. But I'm going to try to explain.

If I were knocking around with a friend who had an acoustic guitar then I would grab my Fluke. If I were singing with a group of kids I would grab my Fluke. It's loud, fun, and looks cool.

If I were posing for a picture I would grab my Oscar Schmidt because it looks beautiful. That's mostly what it's good for. Nothing wrong with that. It really is a pretty concert ukulele.

However, if i'm going to sit in the front lawn by myself under the moonlight and pitch a ballad out there this Kala is the ukulele I'm taking. If I'm singing to my wife, this Kala is the ukulele I'm using. Do you know what that means? It means that this ukulele is special.

I am honestly so genuinely happy with this but. It’s a great Ukulele. My daughter is a cellist so I have some experience with buying good quality instruments. This Ukulele is pretty nice …it’s well built, it looks great, and most importantly it has a beautiful and sweet sound. Really, I love hearing my daughter play it. A HUGE bonus is that the Kala company (who makes this Ukulele) has an awesome educational app that you have access to when you buy there instrument. It is absolutely worth it guys. It really is - they know what they are doing. They very thoughtfully developed a very systematic method for teaching beginners how to play the Ukulele. I should also add that they’ve done it with some humor and tons of beautifully shot videos ….man, I’m gushing, lol. If you can’t tell already I really like this product! This is definitely worth it. There is huge value that comes with this Ukulele. Do it guys you won’t regret it!

This was my first ukulele, i bought it a bit over six months ago and I still can't put it down, it's amazing.
I'm always VERY weary of buying musical instruments online, but my local Sam ash didn't have anything in my price range, so I chose this based on the wonderful reviews and I'm glad I did.
Amazing sound and quality, especially for the price and super fun and easy (but I play guitar so that might be why it took me five minutes to master a good handful of basic chords and an hour to work out "here comes the sun" by ear) to play. I still have the original strings on it and they still sound amazing after all these months.
At first the strings WOULD NOT stay in tune (but I've heard that's just a thing that happens with new strings on ukulele) but after a week or two of tuning and retuning (at first every half-hour or so, but gaining time the more they were tuned until they finally stayed) but now they'll stay in tune for a good few days depending on how much I play and whether or not I use a pick ( I'm told your not supposed to, but I'm a guitarist at heart and I prefer the crisper sound it gives the music so I use a thin size guitar pick )
It's also pretty tough, the zipper on the gig bag I bought for it broke about a month in so it's been flying naked to and from band practice and, occasionally, school and there isn't a scratch on it. I'm comfortable with tossing it onto the (carpeted, I wouldn't try it with hardwood or tile or anything) floor of our practice space at my drummer's house without a second thought, plus I'm a total klutz. But you'd never know what it's been through looking at it.
My one complaint is that the fretboard feels kind of unfinished, which might present problems in the future with repeated use.

Bottom line: his is a great ukulele and you will NOT regret buying it

To be honest I don’t know much about ukeleles, I had originally bought a cheap $20 from Amazon and constantly had to re-tune the strings and eventually gave up on it, but I’m super glad I bought this more expensive one this time around. It’s been a lot of fun learning to play on this one, and the quality is definitely much better than the cheap one I had before. Also, the strings stay in tune much longer. Definitely worth it to get this one if you were thinking of buying a ukelele

I really like this ukulele, and have enjoyed playing it. The construction seems good, and I haven't noticed any flaws in how it was put together, its finish, or it's stability. It's very visually attractive, and aside from a few flaws in the fretboard wood it looks great!

As far as intonation and play is concerned, it is alright. It barely deviates from being in tune up the fretboard, and seems to perform well. The sound is nice and rich, and while I'm just an intermediate player I like it a bit more than my soprano. The extra frets do come in handy for playing some songs as well. My only issue with it is that the third string can buzz a bit when playing the notes a little hard (within reason), but this is a random manufacturing defect that could occur in a new uke. Don't be afraid to return and re-buy this ukulele if you have buzzing issues that can't be easily fixed.

Overall I would definitely buy this ukulele again. It's a pretty cool instrument, and this one performs well. I've talked to friends who have been interested in getting one, and this is the one I recommend.

This is definitely a music instrument instead of a toy. Took some time to tune and break in, but once it's done this is loud and clear. I play guitar so it's easy to pick up, I'm teaching my daughter now.

I can't fault this ukulele. It is comfortable to hold, the neck is wide enough for my small hands to form chords. I only use mine for strumming songs around the house and haven't faced an audience with it but have read reviews where people say they have and they are, seemingly, impressed.
Finish is generic i.e. no decoration just the binding and the KALA logo on the headstock.
Tuners do what they're meant to: tune it without bother. And it holds its tuning.
No glue splashes in sound hole (on my example)
And no sharp fret ends + plus it is light to carry.
All in all I recommend this ukulele 100%
