Frequently Asked Questions

How many hours of direct sunlight does a Ring Solar Panel need for my device to stay charged?

For best performance, Ring recommends at least 2-3 hours of direct sunlight per day for Solar Panel. With the recommended amount of direct sunlight, the device will remain continuously charged under most conditions. Make sure there are no obstructions or objects that could cast a shadow on your solar panel, such as an extended roof, tree, or bush.

Will solar power keep my Ring device charged during cloudy or seasonal weather?

Ring solar products require direct sunlight to stay charged and provide power to the device. If the weather is cloudy or it rains/snows, this would limit the direct sunlight your device receives, which would lessen the charge. Colder temperatures may also cause excessive drain to your device’s lithium-ion battery. With prolonged cloudy or winter weather, you may need to manually recharge the battery more frequently. When sunny weather returns and the solar panel receives enough direct sunlight again, it will keep the device powered.

How can I install my solar panel to get the most sunlight and the maximum solar charge?

Seasonality and how far north or south you live affects the strength of the sun. If you live in the northern hemisphere, install your solar panel facing South. If you live in the southern hemisphere, install it facing North. Ring recommends to use the adjustable arm to angle the panel at about 45 degrees toward the sky to get the most sunlight possible.

Will a Ring solar panel keep my device fully charged at 100% battery level?

The battery level of the device will vary based on the amount of direct sunlight the solar panel receives. Even with exposure to maximum sunlight, the battery level will not exceed a threshold of around 80%—this is to extend the lifetime of the battery.

Great new camera, excellent video, easy install, cord may be too short
I replaced a 3.5 year old Black Ring battery spotlight camera with a solar for a new version with a larger, 4 watt solar panel because the camera and solar panel were having issues. The new white Ring spotlight is simple to set up if you have ample WIFI signal, far easier than these cameras used to be years ago.My old black camera lost most of the LED light on one side and the solar panel was cutting out. Time forA new setup - see the photo of the black camera with the lights on.One important note - the cord on the solar array is MUCH shorter than it used to be - like 1/2 the length.See the photo of the new, larger solar panel with the short cord next to the old, smaller solar panel with the long cord on my shop floor.I got really lucky and the cord was precisely the length I needed by about 4 inches. Otherwise I would have had to have installed an extension cable. The video quality on the new white camera is excellent, audio works well and the larger solar panelshould help on cloudy days and in winter. The one thing Ring needs to update is the reasons for removing an old camera. None of the current choices apply to replacing an old, defective camera.I only buy new Ring camera on sale because I’ve had a LOT of issues with Ring refurbs.Otherwise, it’s a great system with many choices that fit most any application.

I use a Ring stick up cam outdoors to monitor the exterior of my house, however due to the high volume of cars passing by my house everyday, it was activated very frequently and draining my battery fast thus needing me to painstakingly take out battery, recharge, and replace almost once a week. I researched and found out that I can hook up the camera to a solar panel. I ordered this big solar panel to help power this camera since it is activated so frequently.

Product arrived in box with all the parts needed to install. The ease of installment is highly dependent on the tools that you have and material of where you trying to mount it. I installed it in brick and had the correct power tool for it but I found the anchors in the box flimsy and actually used ones I had extras of in my garage. Just beware you might need to make a trip to the home improvement store if you dont have the correct tools.

Once install is done, this product is everything I needed. I no longer need to go up and change the battery and it keeps my camera fully charged. The convenience of not having to replace the battery anymore is well worth the price. Must buy for anyone wanting to keep their ring cameras charged.

The first one I received was defective. It was returned and the replacement is working well. The panel does charge the battery of my Stick Up Cam. However, if you need to use many of the advanced features and the weather is cool to colder, 60 to 40 degrees it can't seem to keep the battery charged. It supplements the battery during the day so it stays moderately charged, but the battery still drains overnight and by morning you'll need to put in a new fully charged battery. So, it adds sufficient power to keep the camera working overnight till about 4 to 5 am. Then you'll need a second fully charged battery to exchange for the now depleted battery. This only works for this length of time if you have a sunny day. If it's cloudy then the panel will not work sufficiently to keep the battery charged. I'm hopeful the panel will work better in warmer sunny weather. Changing batteries, having to use a ladder to do so twice a day is very irritating. I have another Ring Stick Up Cam that also uses a smaller older solar panel and it seems to be working much better then this supposed improved one. So, colder cloudy weather might leave you a bit unhappy with this product. Overall it does charge the battery a little.

I bought this thinking it would at least reduce the frequency of me changing batteries on my camera, but I’ve been pleasantly surprised that it actually keeps the camera fully charged and it doesn’t appear that I’ll ever have to change batteries again. I did not put too much effort in pointing it. Just took a look at where the sun Through different parts of the day and point of the panel to the area of the guy that seemed to get the most sun. Works like a champ, and I have lots of trees in our yard!

Great addition to Ring cameras. Was fed up charging battery every six weeks or so so took a punt and bought this. So happy I did. Have not had to charge battery for 4 months now, always fully charged even with more power thirsty settings. Highly recommended.
