These speakers can star in your entertainment system

I'm always excited when a new ELAC product comes out — they always offer good looks, convenient setup options, and excellent sound quality. The Debut ConneX DCB41 delivers on that promise, with a relatively compact and elegant form factor and connections for a wide range of sources in your entertainment center. Each speaker gets a solid 50 watts, thanks to an amplifier built into one speaker, and there's Bluetooth on board for music streaming convenience.

Connections for your components

These speakers take up very little space and handle just about everything you might care to connect in a small living room or office system. There's an HDMI ARC (Audio Return Channel) input for connecting a compatible TV. You can connect a PC to the Type-B USB port, and there's a digital optical input for a gaming console or CD player. If you're a vinyl lover like me, the stereo RCA input features a switchable built-in phono preamp — a must-have. And if you prefer a little added "oomph," you can hook up a powered subwoofer (sold separately) using the mono RCA output.

My hands-on experience with ELAC Debut ConneX DCB41 powered speakers

I own a pair of these speakers, and they're so versatile, I feel like I can use them just about anywhere. At first, I kept them in my home office, where I mostly connected via Bluetooth and streamed tunes to keep me motivated while working. More recently, I've connected them to the TV in my bedroom — their compact size makes them a perfect fit for the limited space I have on either side of the screen. They have so many connection points, I honestly feel like I'm barely scratching the surface of what they can do. But it's nice to know if I ever want to expand my entertainment options, I can easily add a gaming console or turntable to the mix.

ELAC has long been known for their ability to coax room-filling sound out of relatively compact speakers, and the DCB41s live up to that well-earned reputation. With the XBass function engaged, the speakers alone offer impacful bass that suits my listening preferences. That said, if I do decide to add a gaming system, I'll probably get a small powered sub and connect it to the mono RCA output on the back, so I can get the full emotional impact of in-game sound effects.

Bottom line, these are sweet-sounding, convenient all-around speakers that I expect to use for years to come.

Features

Class D Amplification: The Elac ConneX DCB41 powered speaker system features Class D amplification with Elac's proprietary XBass Enhancer circuitry for dynamic, distortion free high and low frequencies. The 50 watt x 2 channel Class D amplifier powers both speakers, but is only housed in one of the speakers. Binding-post terminals on the back of each speaker and the included 68" speaker wire provide connection between the system's powered speaker and passive speaker.

  • The included 68" speaker wire can be replaced with a longer speaker wire (sold separately - see Accessories Tab), if your setup requires that the speaker's be placed further apart.
  • A switch on back of the powered speaker allows you to select which speaker will be the Left or the Right channel.

2-Way Driver Design: Each speaker of the Elac Debut ConneX DCB41 employs a 2-way driver design that features a 0.75" soft-dome tweeter and a 4.5" polypropylene cone woofer for crisp, clear highs and punchy, accurate bass. The tweeter features custom designed waveguide to control dispersion and directivity improving overall imaging and balance of high frequencies. The long-excursion woofer features a wide-rolled surround to provide increased output for added bass extension.

Bass Reflex Cabinet: The Elac Debut ConneX DCB41 speakers use a bass reflex (ported) cabinet for greater efficiency and bigger bass response. For better lower frequency extension and to minimize ventilation noise, the bass reflex port on the speakers are directed to the rear, in an "S"-shape configuration.

24-Bit/96kHz DAC: The Elac Debut ConneX DCB41 powered speaker system utilizes a 24-bit/96kHz resolution DAC (digital-to-analog converter) for high-quality sound reproduction.

Bluetooth Audio Streaming: The Elac Debut ConneX DCB41 offers built-in Bluetooth 4.0 with support for wireless audio streaming (A2DP) and control (AVRCP). You'll be able to wirelessly stream your music libraries, music apps, and other audio content on your Bluetooth source device (such as your smartphone, tablet, laptop, or computer) to the Debut ConneX DCB41 speaker system. You can pair multiple Bluetooth source devices with the Debut ConneX DCB41 powered speaker system, but only one device can be connected and used for playback at a time.

  • Music Codecs: In addition to supporting the standard Bluetooth SBC codec, the Debut ConneX DCB41 system offers support for Qualcomm's aptX codec. Qualcomm's aptX codec provides even better sound quality with lossless, "CD-quality" (16-bit/44.1kHz) streaming for aptX-compatible source devices, such as many Android smartphones and tablets..
  • Playback Control: You'll also be able to control basic playback functions (such as Play/Pause & Previous/Next Track) from the included remote control. Advanced music playback and song/artist display will still be done from your Bluetooth source device.

Note: The Elac Debut ConneX DCB41 powered speaker system does not support Bluetooth hands-free communication for making and answering phone calls.

USB-B Port: The USB-B input enables you to connect a Windows PC or Mac to the Elac Debut ConneX DCB41 speaker system for playing audio files stored on your laptop or desktop computer. The Debut ConneX DCB41 supports up 24-bit/96kHz PCM/WAV audio files via USB-B.

Note: There is also a USB-A port on the back of the powered speaker for firmware updates and service purposes only.

HDMI ARC: The Elac Debut ConneX DCB41 is equipped a HDMI ARC jack to connect the speaker system to your TV's HDMI ARC input. The Debut ConneX DCB41's HDMI ARC jack allows audio from your TV to be sent to the speaker system for playback. The HDMI ARC jack supports 2ch stereo PCM audio, up to 24-bit/96kHz (not compatible with Dolby Digital or DTS).

Optical Digital Input: The Elac Debut ConneX DCB41 wireless music system is outfitted with an optical (toslink) digital audio input that supports 2ch stereo PCM audio, up to 24-bit/96kHz (not compatible with Dolby Digital or DTS).

Line or Phono Input: The Debut ConneX DCB41 also comes equipped with a stereo audio RCA input and built-in phono preamp, allowing you to connect a line-level source or turntable with a phono MM cartridge. You can toggle between line-level and phono with a simple flip of a switch that is located on the rear-panel of the powered speaker. In addition, there is a ground-terminal to reduce noise.

Sub Out: The Elac Debut ConneX DCB41 is equipped with a mono-RCA subwoofer output for connecting a powered subwoofer (sold separately - see Accessories Tab) to add deep, low bass to the speaker system. The Debut ConneX DCB41's sub output is full-range, so you'll need a powered subwoofer with a built-in low-pass crossover.

Simple Control: The included IR remote control provides wireless operation of the Elac Debut ConneX DCB41 speaker system (the IR receiver is located on front of the powered speaker). From the wireless remote you can control Power On/Off, Source Selection, Volume Up/Down, Mute, Play/Pause, and Previous/Next Track. There is also a power on/off switch, rotary volume knob, and left/right speaker switch on the back-panel of the powered speaker.

Note: With an HDMI ARC connection to your television, you can also use your TV's remote control to operate the Power, Mute, and Volume functions of the Debut ConneX speaker system.

Mounting & Placement Options: The Debut ConneX DCB41 powered speaker system is designed for either bookshelf or stand mounting (see Accessories Tab for desktop and floor stands - sold separately). The speakers come with self-adhesive rubber feet to protect your furniture (the feet add approximately 0.125" to the overall height of the speakers).

  • The speakers should be positioned as close to ear level as possible when in your main seated listening position for optimum performance.
  • Moving the speakers close to a rear wall will enhance the bass frequencies, while moving the speakers away from the rear wall will tend to have the opposite effect.

Note: The Elac Debut ConneX DCB41 does not offer brackets, threaded inserts, or key-hole slots to wall-mount the speakers.

AC Power Required: The Elac Debut ConneX DCB41's powered speaker includes a detachable 6.5' AC power cord that will need to be plugged into an AC power outlet or surge protector (sold separately - see Accessories Tab). The passive speaker does not require AC power.

Note: The Elac Debut ConneX DCB41 speaker system is not battery powered.

Greetings Eric. Excellent question. The Elac Debut ConneX DCB41 has a phono preamp built in, so just connect the Pro-Ject TT, flip the RCA switch to phono, and enjoy.
