    About Paricon
Paricon has had a long and colorful history in the sled-making business, starting in 1861 with the founding of a family business, Paris Manufacturing, in South Paris, Maine, by the great grandfather of current CEO, Hank Morton. From then through today, and into the future, the story unfolds.

It all started, in 1861, when Henry Morton married Lucilla Forbes and the young couple started making sleds in their home. Henry constructed the sleds by hand and his wife decorated them. Their son, Will, an accomplished artist, distinguished himself as a sled painter, specializing in water scenes and scrolls. Hand-decorated sleds today are much sought after by collectors, but the originals were probably meant to ensure that each sled would be a child's prized possession.

During the early 1900s, when each sled was made by hand, the company employed close to 300 workers. It continued in operation as a family business, still employing 200 workers, until the family gave up ownership in 1970s and sold to Gladding Corporation. In 1978, Hank Morton, great-grandson of the founder, headed a group of investors that purchased the company back from Gladding.

Today, Hank and his sons, Ted and Tom, are continuing the family tradition in the sled business with Paricon. The sled line has evolved to include a wide assortment of products for winter use sleds, including steel runner and plastic models at various price points; snowboards; foam sliders; inflatable tubes; wooden toboggans and snow toys. Paricon serves customers throughout the U.S. from its distribution center in South Paris with high-quality products and on-time delivery.

Perfect for even a small amount of snow!

Perfect for even a small amount of snow!
We live in an area of the country that doesn't get much snow (Southeast), so when we do, it's a huge deal. We had a small wooden toddler sled with runners, but it really didn't work well because we'd only get a few inches of snow at a time. It was difficult to pull, and wasn't really designed to go down hills on its own. We needed something that would work for the small amount of snow we typically get, and would also accommodate our kids' needs as they grow.I'd originally considered getting a saucer-style, but after talking with other parents and reading some reviews, I decided not to, because the saucers are harder to control than this straight "boat" style sled (something our four-year-old wouldn't be comfortable with), and I wouldn't be able to sled down gentle hills with my toddler seated with me.So I started looking at various boat-style sleds and most had poor reviews or were very expensive. Then I found these. The reviews were great, and when I read a glowing review for these sleds from someone else who lives in the Southeast, that was the deciding factor for us. We ordered the sleds, and while it took a while for them to arrive, they got here before a big Christmas winter storm hit. We got an orange, a green, and a blue sled. The colors are very vivid and bright, not as muted as the image on the seller's page. Edit: Our sleds are slightly different than the manufacturer's picture here. The nose is more slanted to accommodate longer legs, and the holes for the rope are smaller and closer together. My four-year-old loved the sleds so much, and it was delightful to watch her having so much fun. She used it to load snow in for building a snowman, and easily pulled the full sled (by herself) all around our yard.Highly recommend these sleds!

Bought these for me and my beer drinking friends in advance of last week's big snowstorm. We had a total blast using them, but they are not indestructible. The cold makes them brittle, and keep your feet and knees out of them. Just find a big hill, sit or lie down and have someone give you a big push. We inadvertently found a 3 foot dropoff which was the ultimate demise of all three sleds. We were finding pieces of jagged blue plastic in the woods a day later (ok, we were sledding at night the first time and didn't see the dropoff). The upshot is, you can stack them together as they start to come apart. Have some duct tape on hand; some nice long strips on the bottom and covering cracks, and you've got at least another 30 minutes of sledding. They really fly on a nice steep downhill. Steering takes some practice, best achieved by using your hands as rudders. All that said, these are perfect for little kids but adults need to take it easy, or do what we're going to do next time, and find some aircraft grade aluminum bullet shaped projectiles coated with a non-nutritive cereal varnish, and take to the neighborhood slopes once again. Bring the snow!

I bought these last season for our kids (3 yo, 2 yo, 1 yo). The term 'lightning' is actually used by Paricon's marketing deparment accurately! Below is a summary:

-SPEED-
Yes, these sleds are fast! Almost too fast. I love them fast but one time when I put my 3 yo son on a small slope, he went way faster and farther than I expected, barely missed a tree, and went through the slats of a wooden fence (I know, I was a top candidate for Dad-of-the-Year)! Lesson learned. Definitely too fast for my little ones to use alone so I have to ride with them.

-FUNCTION-
They work well on different types of snow. Since the bottom is flat (unlike the tracks used by traditional sleds), even deep snow is no match for this. The only gripe, and it's a small one, is that you feel every unsmooth snow patch of imperfection on your rear end.

-DURABILITY-
Seems durable enough but I've only used them for one season so far. I'll update this review if any cracks appear over time.

-BRING-BACK-UP-THE-HILL FACTOR-
These are obviously lighter than the old school wooden sleds. Although they fit under my arm, it's much easier to just pull them behind you. Since they are so light, the bonus is that you can even pull your kid back up the hill as well. It would have been nice if ropes were included for each sled so I didn't have to borrow one from another sled.

-VALUE-
Good price for three sleds (~$12 each). I would be slightly annoyed if I only have one child but I actually need multiple sleds.

These sleds were used about 12 hours over 4 days by 6 children ages 3 to 10 and adults on thin, icy snow through which some roots and rocks protruded. The sleds experienced glancing blows off trees and occasionally hit shrubs and small trees (without serious injury to passengers). Within 2 hours of use, 2 sleds developed cracks, but were still usable. On the third day of use, one of the cracked sleds developed a large hole that scooped up snow near the back, making it unusable. One of the sleds did not develop a crack, but has scrapes and gouges on the underside. I rated these sleds 4 stars because they are thick plastic and a good design (the ridges underneath keep the sleds on track) and under "normal" use, would still be usable. (A more expensive sled used along with these was more difficult to steer and also suffered damage in a short period of time.) In spite of damage to them, I would buy these again and recommend them as a good value.

I was worried when I bought these sleds that they might suck - the only reason I could think of that they came in a 3 pack was that they must be poorly made, and will break easily... But this is not the case! They seem sturdy, and fit me and my son easily. I am really happy I got them, and I think the value is great. Next year when my son is old enough to sled on his own we will have one for him, one for me, and one for my husband - so now I'm glad I have 3! The only downside to these sleds is they don't come with string pulls, only holes for them. So you will need to add your own string. Not really a big deal.

Edited to add: These finally busted after four years of heavy use. We intend to buy another set because they worked so well for us.

This winter will be our third year using these sleds, and they work great. None of them have broken so far despite our kids using them in the yard when there's no snow. The kids love sledding with them. They fit an adult plus a kid, slightly squishy, but fun all the same. They wipe out easily and have crazy steering capabilities.

All three sleds broke quickly - 2 of them on the first run, and the third after just a few runs. Around the neighborhood, all the kids agree these are the worst sleds because they break. We didn't believe them because we used to have these sleds from a few years ago and they never broke, the plastic just got slowly worn through until there were holes. We confidently (foolishly) bought these sleds thinking we were replacing the 3 year old ones, but we immediately realized the neighborhood kids were right. These new ones have very brittle plastic, nothing like the old sleds. We were SO sad to waste the money and the plastic AND miss out on sledding fun. Last week, we were walking around downtown and saw one of these sleds broken and stuffed into a municipal garbage can. These sleds are like a child's worst nightmare, like the beanie that promises to make you fly, and you send away for it with all your saved up proofs-of-purchase and all your biggest dreams, only to find that when it comes in the mail, it's a sad, sad piece of garbage.

Bought these for my boys (ages 9 & 14) for Christmas. Hit a bump on the third trip down the hill and the sled shattered into a bunch of pieces on landing. They never rode the other ones again and were very disappointed in their Christmas gift. It was only -10C, I'd hate to see what they'd do if it was actually cold out.
