A couple useful mods really help
With over 200 reviews there's not much else to offer, but I made some modifications to mine that made it a bit more useful and addressed two of it's biggest cons.First, I got the three Shop Vac brand 14" extension wands, to extend the reach of the short hose and save me from bending over. I then mounted 3 sections of 1.5" PVC pipe cut into 9.5" sections on the bottom of the canister. This gave me a place to securely store the 3 wands and strengthened the base a bit, in case it gets dragged around in rough ground enough to eventually wear through the canister. To mount the PVC, I used six 1/4" carriage bolts and washers on the pipe side, with bonded sealing washers (metal washers bonded to thick rubber washers) and hex bolts inside the canister. The smooth round end of the carriage bolts inside the pipe acts to lock in the wands a few inches before the end, and they slide in and out easily but stay in securely.Next I took the little dusting brush that Amazon says is frequently purchased with the 3 extension wands. I wanted to keep this tool with the vac along with the included nozzles. Just as I went to screw in a pipe strap to hold the brush to the vac (a setup I didn't really care for), I noticed the the outlet/blower hole. The brush fits tight in there and solves another annoying thing about this vac. The air outlet tends to blow things around, particularly for a right hander. With the brush in there, it directs the air flow up and away from the material you're trying to vacuum, and diffused the air stream as well. All told I think the mods cost me around twenty bucks, and added just a little weight and height to the vac, but really increased the vac's usefulness and convenience, at least for me.

This thing is awesome. I would say it's slightly less powerful than a corded shop vac, but way more convenient. The only thing this hasn't been able to consistently pick up is small nails. When it does they sometimes get stuck sideways in the hose so I probably shouldn't vacuum them anyway. I was a little leery about the smaller size but it hasn't been an issue at all. My only beef with it is my beef with all wet/dry vacs, the filters get full of saw dust or whatever particulate matter is floating around and then you lose suction. This is where the vac being small comes in handy. My old corded shop vac never got more than 1/4 or so full before the filter clogged up. There was no point in taking it apart to clean the filter and then not emptying the thing, so the extra space didn't really matter. Depending on how much dust is around this thing gets 1/2 to 2/3 full before the filter needs to be cleared out. So the size is just right.

Being able to carry it around without a cord is huge though. I use it on my car and around whatever job I'm working on. I can easily carry it around with one hand and it makes light work out of cleaning up. I wouldn't mind having a longer hose or a few other attachments for it, but I'm overall very pleased and would recommend in a heartbeat. I'm using a 60v 6ah flexvolt battery, but the battery life has also been very good from my experience. I also appreciate that it has a cord too. I have a few batteries so I only needed the cord the first day I got it before my batteries arrived. But I'm glad that in many years when dewalt changes up their batteries this will still be a useful tool.

I've owned this vacuum for a year and a half now, and I've used it constantly over that time. It's very convenient for small jobs where you don't want to drag out the big shop vac. One reviewer said it can "suck a golf ball through a water hose", but I'm here to tell you, that is nowhere close to being true. This vacuum is really not very powerful even compared to its competition such as the Milwaukee 0880-20 18-Volt Cordless Wet/Dry Vacuum, but that said, it is powerful enough for every job I've used it for. This includes dry applications - which I've mostly used it for - and wet applications. I've used it to remove water from a toilet tank for example when replacing a toilet and a couple of other wet applications. The Milwaukee is definitely more powerful, and I knew that when I purchased this Dewalt because I had used both, but the DeWalt is certainly sufficient.

However, this DeWalt vacuum has a few other advantages over the Milwaukee:

* The DeWalt, while not quiet by any means, is MUCH quieter than the Milwaukee. The Milwaukee makes a loud high-pitched screaming sound - so loud I wouldn't use it for an extended period without ear protection. The DeWalt is not as loud and not nearly as annoying.

* The DeWalt has a cord, whereas the Milwaukee does not. So if you run out of battery, you can keep going if you have access to an outlet. That was a major plus for me.

* The DeWalt is somewhat smaller, and generally more rounded. It's just a bit easier to carry around and use than the big, square, sort of toolbox-looking Milwaukee vac.

* I already had an investment in DeWalt 20v batteries and chargers, so that was a motivator as well.

Now, for the reason why I didn't give it 5 stars: Recently it stopped working on the battery. It still worked on the cord, but it would not power up on the battery. I have several DeWalt 20v batteries, so I tried others to ensure it wasn't just the battery, and sure enough, it was the vacuum. I've read a couple of other reviews with the same issue - it appears the battery connector goes bad. This sort of happened slowly - at first I noticed when running on the battery the motor would slow down and speed up while I was using it - sort of like it was running out of battery power, but this would happen when the battery (a 3ah model) was fully charged. Then, after a few weeks it finally stopped running on the battery completely.

One big plus for DeWalt is that this vacuum has a 3-year warranty, so I took it to the DeWalt factory service center about 15 miles from me. At first the guy at the counter tried to blame my battery even after I told him I tested it and it wasn't the battery causing it. So - I didn't say a word and just pulled a second battery out of my coat pocket, plugged it in and flipped the switch... nothing. He smiled at me sheepishly and said, I guess it's not the battery. He also tried to tell me that it was only a one-year warranty, which was also wrong, so I told him no, it's 3 years... Look it up if you don't believe me. (You would think a guy working in a DeWalt Service Center would know that???). So he did and found that it was indeed a three-year warranty. He then took my vac and said it will be about a week and we will ship it back to you when it's fixed.

10 days later I didn't have a vac in my possession, so I called them. They looked it up and said "yes, we'll probably get a chance to look at that in a couple of weeks". I said hey, the guy at the counter said I would have it back in ONE week. I got the "who told you that?" routine. Finally he said we'll look at it tomorrow and hung up. Later that day I got a voice mail, saying please call us about your vacuum. I called and they said, well, we looked at it, and the part you need is back-ordered from the factory for several MONTHS! I thought great, that's nice. Then, before I had a chance to say anything he said: "So we're going to give you a brand new vacuum; it will be ready this afternoon if you want to come and pick it up." Wow! that's nice!

So bottom line as of today I have a brand new one, with new accessories, filter and everything, all new in an unopened box. So I have a mixed review of the warranty service. The first guy at the counter was fairly clueless and didn't seem to care much, and gave me a run-around about the warranty, but in the end, they gave me a brand new one, so you can't beat that.

I have to say, I own probably a dozen or more DeWalt tools, both corded and cordless, everything from routers, to drill/drivers and hammer drills, circular saws, and miter saws, and on and on. This is the FIRST DeWalt tool I've ever owned that I had a problem with. So I'm giving them the benefit of the doubt on this one.

I do like this little vac!

In consideration that some have found the suction performance of this vacuum limited, I hesitated from buying this vacuum for over a year hoping that DeWalt would bring out a newer version that has more power. I'm passionate about DeWalt tools and I have allot of 20V-Max tools and batteries so despite the reviews presented herein, when my old 5 gal shop vacuum started to "grind to a halt" I decided to throw caution to the wind and buy it. To be clear, this is NOT a "shop vacuum" and to compare with one would be unfair. Suction power from even a cheap 5 gal conventional vacuum lays waste to this unit. Even small corded shop vacuums use 5 A motors and this one has a 2.6 A motor (based on the label) so it has half the power. The suction is good and usable but not truly powerful. If you have a big mess to clean up, need to root-out hairs from a carpet, or you want to clean your car or truck get something else. Also, like cheap vacuums (all types), the suction air that passes through the fan also cools the motor so don't use this for cleaning up fine dust like drywall/concrete/talc/flour/rock, etc. Used this way, the filter will plug up in short order and will burn out the motor so if you have to tackle this get something else.
Below are the merits of this unit and the rationale I have for scoring five stars:
1. Construction quality - Well built as evidenced by a neoprene rubber gasket sealing the bottom to the top. This optimizes suction and prevents leaks if collecting water. The on/off switch "clacks" with authority just like the side clamps for the bottom. Feels consistent with DeWalt quality.
2. Versatility - Go cordless or corded when the battery goes flat. The unit switches almost seamlessly between battery or 120V. Note however, while on 120 V, there is a noticeable loss of power. I don't know exactly why but I suspect that there is just one 18V DC motor that gets power from either the battery directly or through a AC/DC rectifier where there may be some power losses in that circuitry on its way to the motor. Works with standard 1 1/4 in vacuum hose attachments and can be used as a blower (for small jobs).
3. Wet or dry applications - This unit does either and when filled with water, a ball shuts off the air flow to the fan. The owner's manual recommends that the filter remain in place at all times, even when vacuuming water as it is made of plastic. The filter is fine enough to use as a backup to a cannister or upright vacuum for cleanup of ordinary house dust so it won't recirculate this dust and can be washed easily. You can't do that with a shop vacuum unless a paper filter and bag are installed.
4. Capacity - With 2 gal capacity and a micro-screen filter cartridge, this vacuum makes a better choice than a hand-held vacuum as it has more suction power so even with a 2 A-Hr battery, there's enough time and power to clean up lint, dust and crumbs under the whole couch or fridge. You can even take this camping with you in case you need to clean up sand from the inside the tent or RV.
5. Noise - Quiet enough to use as an alternative to a cannister vacuum if you need suction to clean out the dust from inside computers and other electronics.
6. Video Reviews - Please check out all the YouTube reviews and decide for yourself.
