Product Description

In Ark Nova, you will plan and design a modern, scientifically managed zoo. With the ultimate goal of owning the most successful zoological establishment, you will build enclosures, accommodate animals, and support conservation projects all over the world. Specialists and unique buildings will help you in achieving this goal. At the heart of Ark Nova are 255 cards featuring animals, specialists, unique enclosures, and conservation projects, each with a particular ability. Use them to increase the appeal and scientific reputation of your zoo and to collect conservation points. Each player has a set of action cards, which you will use and upgrade to carry out your plans. Each player has a set of five action cards to manage their gameplay, and the power of an action is determined by the slot the card currently occupies. The cards are: BUILD: Allows you to build standard or special enclosures, kiosks, and pavilions. ANIMALS: Allows you to accommodate animals in your zoo. CARDS: Allows you to gain new zoo cards (animals, sponsors, and conservation project cards). ASSOCIATION: Allows your association workers to carry out different tasks. SPONSORS: Allows you to play a sponsor card in your zoo or to raise money. With a lot of love for the theme, game designer Mathias Wigge has created an interestingly interwoven game. With high replayability and rich components, Ark Nova provides a remarkable gaming experience that will bring the game to the table again and again.

Has taken up my life, it’s so entertaining. The learning curve is significant, but worth it to me. There are a couple of decent play-throughs on YouTube that have been very helpful. Watched them on longer car trips! The game’s solo capacity is well-thought out. In the game, there are often so many plays, and choices to be made, within each move that, without having another player to check, having a system in place to know when a turn is complete is helpful. I’ve learned to pull down the action card I’m playing and leave it there until all of the moves are complete. Once it’s moved to the first position again, then I move the solo cubes indicating the end of the turn. A great winter’s day game alone or with a friend.

It did take a few YouTube videos to help figure out the game. The first game took about three hours and we made multiple mistakes. However, we were hooked about 20 mins into the first game. There is so many options of how to play the game. We are a family that LOVE to play board games. Ark Nova may be our new favorite - it will be a top pick when we have 2 hours available to play a game. We love to play board games, but have found not everyone in the family likes the same games. This game crossed the gab and seems that everyone agree it's a great game. Remember - you will need a couple hours open to play. There are multiple ways to be successful in the game. Love that your don't really know who's winning until the very end. Love how many different options there are to play the game. Multiple successful strategies that can be used to win. There is a more aggressive game play where you can do damage to other players. We do have some who love this type of game play and others who do not - so for us, we did not play with this option. I have heard this is similar to Transforming Mars. We've not play TM, so I don't know if this is true. Highly recommend Ark Nova.

This game took some time to figure out, because it is so in depth, which was frustrating in the first few games - it would be great if they had some sort of scaled-down starter run through. However, once we got into it, it's super absorbing and a fun way to spend 2 hours. We picked this because we have enjoyed Terraforming Mars and heard this recommended as having similar characteristics. After a few play throughs, we also added a house rule that we play until both of us 'cross the finish line' and then the person with the highest score wins, versus the game ending immediately after the first person hits the criteria - it can be frustrating to build for two hours toward a goal and not be able to complete it, so this house rule made it a lot more enjoyable for us. I recommend for folks who enjoy in depth games!

I got Ark on a whim and minor recommendation from a friend of mine, and oh man, did it follow through.

Ark Nova is a very large game about running a zoo while also taking part in animal conservation efforts across the globe.
Turns happen one after another were players choose one of five actions like playing animal cards, building enclosures, assisting conservations, getting sponsors or drawing more cards. While turns are short, they do require quite a bit of strategy and forward thinking as another players action could force you to change your next move.
There are a multitude of winning strategys available as well. My fist game was focusing strictly on primates, another player mainly aimed towards getting animals of a certain continent while someone else goal was to increase his fame through sponsorships.
The game also supports nearly 250, beautifully photographed cards of animals all across the globe, making it a aesthetically pleasing as well!

My only real gripe with the game is that the rules can be difficult starting out.
Our group started the game and didn't really get into the flow of the turns for the first 2 hours; and when the box say an average game takes about 2 and a half to 3 hours, they mean it.
So while the game is great, it's not really for new board game players or people looking for a casual game.

All-in-all, a great game and I highly recommend it to anyone looking for a great time killer or who has a love of all things animals!

This game was above and beyond what I thought it would be. It’s a good strategy and card management type of game. I play a few times a week with my girlfriend. And there are enough different maps and animals to play differently each time you play.
