    Product Description

Canon’s all-new 45 Megapixel full-frame sensor is at the heart of the EOS R5’s superb image quality, which also leads the way for impressive
8K DCI cinematic movie capture with the ability to extract 35.4 Megapixel still images. Focus and speed are paramount in the EOS R5, providing
impressive continuous capture at speeds of up to 20 frames-per-second and with Dual Pixel CMOS AF II capability, to track split second
movements of even the most elusive of subjects. With 1,053 Automatic AF zones, it is easier than ever to photograph people with the use of
Eye, Face and Head Detection AF, or intuitively track the whole body, face or eye of cats, dogs, or birds with Animal Detection AF. The 5-axis
in-body image stabilization can effectively compensate for camera shake with approximately 8 stops of stabilization with use of both non-stabilized,
and optically image stabilized lenses. Connectivity like 5GHz and 2.4GHz Wi-Fi and Bluetooth, is also included.

A great upgrade for people coming from older Canon cameras.
    5 out of 5 stars
A great upgrade for people coming from older Canon cameras.
I have used the R5 to shoot two weddings as well as multiple other hobby projects. It is a massive improvement over the Canon 7D2 that I was using for 4 years prior to this. The autofocus, even in low light is amazing, and the EVF allows me to see the changes to the photo on the fly as I adjust ISO, aperture, and shutter speed. It's almost like i'm editing in camera and it lets me be sure I got the photo I intended without needing to take time to review them on the back screen. My main reasons for upgrading were to upgrade to full frame, have a camera that would have better noise control for my astrophotography, as well as an increase in resolution for larger prints. While the R5 is an amazing camera, it is also on the high end of price ($3,900 at the time of writing this). The camera also uses one CFexpress type B, and one SD card in dual slots to record your pictures/video to. While the SD cards are more affordable for a 128GB card, the CFexpress cards were $250 at the time I bought them.In comparison, the Canon R6 is a 20MP full frame camera, is $2500 at the time of writing this, and uses two SD cards. It might be the better option for anyone who is on a tight budget, and doesn't need or want the 8K video and higher resolution of the R5. A friend of mine has the R6 and the focus and eye tracking works just as well as the R5.I did rent a Canon 28-70mm f/2.0 (R lens) to shoot a wedding and it was amazing for the low light, that being said, I have yet to buy any R lenses as I have been using my EF glass with the Canon control ring adapter and they have been working excellent with this camera. The sample images I have included have all used my old lenses and were adapted to the R5:1. The table shot was taken at one of the two weddings i've shot, using my Canon EF 50mm f/1.8 and it has enough detail to clearly see the pattern in the fabric flowers in the jar.2. The wavy lights shot was me messing around with the bulb settings and my remote shutter release while making some desktop backgrounds/photoshoot backgrounds (I use an old 50 inch, 1080 resolution tv on a stand, at a slight tilt to avoid glare while positioning a model in front).3. The night sky shot was me steeping outside my house to test the noise levels that the camera creates with "high" ISO and long exposures. It was taken at ISO 3200 for 14 seconds at 24mm. I also tested the camera at 6400 and found the noise to be very acceptable, especially when I compare it to my Canon 7D2. I will put it through even more of a test during the next milky way season when I travel to Acadia and other dark sky areas.I would highly recommend this camera based on my usage. I have taken at least 10,000 photos with it since it was delivered in September. Now that i've moved to full frame and enjoy the performance of the R5 (compared to my 7D2) I don't see myself upgrading for at least the next 8 years or more.

The elephant in the room is the cost and video issues. I don't do video so I don't care about that aspect and Canon has fixed some of the issues with the latest firmware releases. As for the cost, there is no getting around it. For those able/willing to accept it, you will be getting a great camera. I was an old DSLR snob for the longest time but I haven't touched my DSLRs since I got this. I primarily shoot wildlife (birds) and landscape images. The shots I get with the R5 are incredible. I opted for the R5 over the R6 knowing that I would occasionally need to crop in for some bird images. I am able to maintain quality when cropping.

The eye detection is truly amazing. I am continually surprised at how well the camera detects the birds from great distances through brush and busy backgrounds. That being said, there are times where I will revert to spot focusing since the camera will sometimes miss eye focus. The autofocus is also great for locking onto birds in flight. As a long time hobbyist, I could never hope to focus quick enough. The R5 eye detection allows me to capture images I would normally not get.

I also use the camera to take pictures of my son's soccer games. I can track player movement, focus on specific players in a group, capture fast moving sequences. At 12 fps in mechanical mode, I am able to stop action with ease. I did use electronic shutter and it is smooth like butter. You are essentially taking a very fast stop action video. The problem is that you don't realize how many pictures you are capturing when you hold down the shutter button. You can fill a card pretty quickly in electronic mode. I only shoot to the SD card slot and have never filled the buffer during a game.

Again, this is an expensive camera but it is worth the price tag for my uses. Great image quality. Incredible eye detection autofocus. Good image quality at high ISO (not a lot of noise). Ability to use my old EF lenses with an adapter with no loss in image quality or autofocus speeds. I have used the R5 with RF lenses and they do add another level of quality and decrease weight. I am just not ready to sell all my old EF lenses to invest in a pure RF system.

Wow! I had a 5d mark iv, which I loved. During the first day of owning the R5 mirrorless I thought everything was strange. By the end of the week the camera was familiar and I was navigating it easily. It has now been one month and for fun I went back to the 5d mark iv today to see if it was really that different. It was crazy, the 5d mark iv feels like an antique now.

Having access to the full sensor for autofocus points and animal af is way better than the old way of focusing. When animal af doesn't work the normal modes outperform too. The screen is brighter, the button layout is very intuitive (except video record on top, but you can always reassign buttons). The articulating screen is a much bigger advantage than I thought it'd be for landscapes, animals, and flowers. Silent electronic shutter is my new favorite mode; no more scaring animals or feeling annoying in quiet places such as arboretums. Self video recording is so much easier with people eye af, r5 stayed locked on eye the whole time.

Some of the negatives I have are it took awhile to get used to the electronic viewfinder. The viewfinder seems to lag a bit and can be hard to view in lowlight. The main lcd display only turns off when you look through the viewfinder or if the articulating screen is turned around. Itd be nice if there was just an on/off button for it. Battery life isn't as good, but I can still walk around for 4hrs occasionally using the camera and be fine (5d mark iv batteries work).

I have 1 rf lens and a 1 ef-rf adapter for all my ef lenses. The ef lenses perform amazingly and it is nice to have some IBIS for the non is lenses.

This camera is so close to being perfect, and is clearly the best available right now. You can really tell that the cameras coming in the future are going to be phenomenal. If I was just starting out in photography I can not think of a better camera to own. For professionals the full sensor autofocus, extra customizations, and electronic viewfinder will be big bonuses over other bodies; allowing you to be more precise and effective.

The future of mirrorless cameras is here. Coming from a 5D Mark IV and other dslrs I was very used to using an OVF. But the R5’s EVF is large, bright, sharp and as a bonus, I don’t need to wear glasses with nearsighted vision when looking through the EVF. Autofocus is lightning fast and there’s minimal lag and blackout when using mechanical shutter at 12 fps. If you’re concerned about the stop motion effect in the EVF when tracking from the EOS R, this camera is worlds better due to faster processing from Digic X processor.

IBIS is a game changer and works amazing with adapted EF lenses. I was able to handhold at ISO 100 using an adapted 24-70 f2.8 ii indoors! With the same lens on the 5D4, I had to use a minimum of ISO 6400 to get a sharp image. This opens a whole new world in terms of low light photography and stabilization for EF and RF lenses that don’t have IS in the lens.

In terms of handling, the body feels lighter than the 5D4 and the grip is a bit less beefy which is comfortable in my hand. The joystick is back as well as the rear wheel. I do wish the rear wheel was bigger.

I do not use video much so don’t need to record 8k for extended periods of time. If overheating is a concern for you, you may want to look into a dedicated video camcorder. As for stills, this is a near perfect camera for me.

In terms of battery life I was able to take about 650 pictures before the battery died and I was using 120hz for the viewfinder and reviewing the menu settings a lot. This is about double the CIPA rating so I’m happy with it despite being lower than the 5D4 but that’s excepted bc mirrorless camera uses more battery. Overall, I’m very impressed with this camera, and it’s a big upgrade and worthy successor to the 5D Mark IV.
