Honest review for a great Product. Coleman does not disappoint.
5 out of 5 stars
Honest review for a great Product. Coleman does not disappoint.
I (like other reviewers here) debated between the Sport-brella XL and the Coleman Beach shade. I did a lot of research on shade structures. I chose the Coleman and am glad I did. The structure arrived earlier than expected. I set the structure up at home before leaving for the beach. Took me about 10 minutes the first time setting it up. I was able to easily roll it back up, poles and all and get it back in the bag. The bag is small but if you roll it just like they direct and if needed fold the tent in quarters to the size of the bag you can get it back in the bag.We took the structure to a windy beach in California. I set the structure up in camp (one could pop it open by your car) because I didn't want it to blow away, this took closer to five minutes to set up. Keep the tent zipped closed, pick it up, sort of 1/2 fold it and take it down to the beach. The tent stakes it comes with are short for the sand, but angle them in and they work great. We also used the Sand bags (comes with 6) they worked great to keep our blankets and the tent down. I was really worried about the window in the back only, (no side windows) but it was no problem, stayed cool even when there was no wind and it was hot on the beach. Opened the back door, kept the screen closed and it worked great.I saw others on the beach with the Sunbrella, they were constantly battling the sun. Moving the umbrella's. If you angle the Coleman correctly you don't have to battle the sun or move it. The front of the structure was just long enough to shade my family or we draped a towel a bit in the front. The structure is made of tent material, but it is strong. The front panel does zip closed all the way, there are other similar models that do not.We put two of the JJ coles essential blankets side by side just on the inside of the structure and it fit three adults with some left over room. The structure would fit a family with two adults and two small kids fine. We had a small cooler and a couple of regular sized back packs in the structure with still plenty of room. There are small mesh pockets on the inside near the front that held sunblock and sunglasses. At night we just zipped the tent up and took it back to camp, left it closed and took it back to the beach in the morning. When we left we packed it back down in camp. We just lifted the structure up and the sand slipped out. Packed it back down in the parking lot and fit it right back into the bag.I'm glad I chose the Coleman over the umbrella's. I can't say enough good things about this structure.

This beach tent is the best for price, design, features, and quality. The beach shelters/tents that sell for less are usually not as sturdy and large as this one. Plus the others are depicted more as "shelters" wheras this one is lite and airy like a shelter but has more tent-like features. In the design description it is the only one I found that can handle light to moderate rain so that was the best selling point for me as it makes a chancey day at the beach worth it. I just climb inside and wait for the drizzle to stop and out comes the sun again. The ones designed as just shelters let in the rain and have no privacy door.

All the other reviews are fair too except for folks that say it's hard to put together. It is really easy. I do it myself, but it would take half the time with a partner. And yes the wind makes it more difficult to set up but that's why I bring it to the beach in the first place so I can stop getting sand in my mouth/eyes and take a break from the sun. Even have a nice lunch inside sans the sand in my sandwich and the seagulls who swipe my food. The only other option is to check out those "pop up" versions. But they cost twice the price as the Coleman.

Here are the perks: sturdy for wind and some rain, sun protection 50+, back door can be switched to an open or screened window, clothes drying line in side, large enough for two adults to lay down in even when fully zipped up, roomy enough for entire family of 3 to 4 if you have children.

So bring on the wind and let me enjoy my beach time. And yes if you are wondering, the front door zips up so there's privacy for changing clothes or whatever else you care to do depending on what beach you are at. Thanks to the other reviewers who recommended this product!

This is a fantastic shade for the beach. It does take a few minutes to set up, but it's really fast and easy once you get used to it. We live in Florida, so we go to the beach often. We rinse the tent and the hardware (not the sand bags) after each beach trip so the tent will last longer since the salt water is rough on just about everything. When the tent is set up properly it will withstand even moderately strong winds, much better than an umbrella, which we also have.

A bit of advice on the set-up: Sometimes when trying to feed the poles through they will get stuck in the material. We fixed this by attaching the caps of ink pens to the end of the pole that will be getting fed. Then just remove the cap so the pole fits properly into the grommet. For the larger pole the end of a Sharpie marker is the perfect size, and for the smaller poles the end of a Pentel RSVP pen works great. Not advertising for these products, they just happened to be what they had and were absolutely perfect. It makes feeding the poles a simpler, smoother process.

The tent has a window in the back which can be opened to expose the screen and allow the wonderful ocean breeze to flow through, or a shade that can be closed when the sun begins to set behind the tent. It has ample room for two beach chairs in the front and coolers or other beach items stored in the back. It makes a full day at the beach comfortable and enjoyable. Many naps have been taken in our tent :)

Now for the best part: We are in our fifth season with this tent, and other than the ends of the poles being slightly rusted it looks as good as it did when we purchased it, with moderate use and proper care, so it is made to last.

I bought this product two years ago and have used this for our annual weekly beach trips.

I love it. MY wife and I were able to set it up and take it down pretty easily. It takes us about 5-10 minutes to set up and take down. It depends on how windy it is. More wind and it's more difficult. That being said, it's well worth it. We got lots of compliments from other beach goer's.
It's easy to transport and once you set it up, the floor makes a nice place to set bags, towels, clothes, and other gear that you don't want to get covered in sand. The awning is an appropriate size. It will fit two adults and a 50 qt cooler in the shade.
The interior pockets are useful for collecting small trash or putting valubles in and the clothes line is also great for drying off shirts and shorts.

I've read where people talk about it getting too warm. I never had this problem, but we typically leave the back window down/screen up. It feels like it's 10 degrees cooler on the inside and is a great place to take a nap. I'm sure if you zipped it up it would get quite warm, but we never really experimented with this.

We used this daily for a week each summer. We didn't put the tent in it's bag daily. The tent bag is compact and the tent has to be precisely folded to fit in the bag. It's not a problem if you're able to take your time and fold the tent in a garage or away from wind and sand, but if you're going to do this on the beach, you may find this to be a frustrating experience. It is a snug fit. Whenever we left the beach, we just rolled the tent up and put it in our wagon and went back to our condo. We had no problems getting it back into the travel bag to pack into the car to head home.

The construction leaves some to be desired. That's why I gave this 4 stars. The grommets are pretty flimsey. I had to buy some extra 3/8" grommets because I've already lost two. The grommets were easy to replace, and I think the new grommets that I've put on actually seem stronger than the manufacturer grommets. Also the mesh that the poles fits through ripped/punctured this year. It's not bad and the tent is still usable. The zippers have been performing well. The sea salt air has not caused any rust or malfunction which is great. The tent also does not appear to have faded much at all if any.

I would also recommend buying Coleman's Tent Kit. It includes a small broom and extra stakes with a rubber mallet. (https://www.amazon.com/Coleman-2000016526-Tent-Kit/dp/B0009PUQ8M/ref=sr_1_1?ie=UTF8&qid=1495991489&sr=8-1&keywords=coleman+broom)
The tent stakes that are included are sorta flimsy, but those are easy to replace. I'm still using the included stakes, but where we vacation the sand is soft. That being said, I think I will have to replace them in the next 2-3 years. The tent kit that I mentioned above is great, especially the little broom and dust pan. Extremely convenient and easy to use to help get rid of the sand that will inevitably find its way onto the tent floor. The coleman shade also has 2 guy-lines which are extremely effective at stabilizing the tent in high winds. The coleman tent kit has an additional 4 stakes which help to anchor the tent.

Overall this is a great product. I'm glad that I got this over an umbrella. An umbrella is probably easier to set up, but you don't get the stability, versatility, floor, and privacy.
